Cape Town drivers should be ready for some traffic challenges and road closures around the time of the State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Thursday, 6 February.
The event, taking place at City Hall, will cause disruptions in and around the city, with some restrictions lasting until 19 February.
Road Closures and Traffic Delays
As SONA attracts political leaders, dignitaries, and officials, security measures will be heightened, leading to the closure of several major roads.
This will affect the usual flow of traffic, especially in the city bowl area, and also reduce available parking.
The City of Cape Town confirmed that the road closures before, during, and after the event will impact traffic flow and limit parking in the city.
Motorists can expect significant congestion around the city center and nearby areas, with signage placed to help direct them.
If you’re traveling through these zones, it’s a good idea to allow extra time for your journey and use navigation apps for real-time traffic updates.
“We urge motorists to please check the list of closures carefully and plan their routes accordingly,” the city advised.
Parliament Gears Up for the Annual Address
President Cyril Ramaphosa has formally requested a Joint Sitting of Parliament at 19:00 on 6 February for the delivery of his address.
The session will be led by National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza and National Council of Provinces Chairperson Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane.
This will be the first SONA of the seventh democratic Parliament, setting the stage for the parliamentary year ahead.
Ramaphosa is expected to highlight the government’s achievements, address any challenges, and outline priorities for the coming year.
It’s a key event in South Africa’s political calendar.
Tips for Navigating Cape Town During SONA
To minimize the impact of the road closures, the City of Cape Town recommends the following:
- Allow extra time for travel, as delays are likely.
- Avoid unnecessary trips into the city center.
- Use online maps to find alternative routes around the closures.
- Exercise patience, as traffic volumes are expected to be higher than usual.
With the logistical challenges of SONA in mind, it’s important for residents and motorists to plan ahead.
How do you think these road closures will affect your daily routine?
