Former Bafana Bafana midfield maestro Thulani Serero is on the verge of making a return to South African football after spending more than a decade playing abroad.
However, contrary to past speculations linking him to Kaizer Chiefs, the experienced playmaker appears to be heading to Cape Town City instead.
Advanced Talks with Cape Town City
The 34-year-old midfielder, who has been plying his trade in the Middle East for the past six years, is reportedly in advanced negotiations with Cape Town City following his departure from the region.
Before his time in the Gulf, Serero enjoyed a successful seven-year stint in the Netherlands, playing for Ajax Amsterdam after leaving Ajax Cape Town in 2011.
Muhsin Ertugral, a former Kaizer Chiefs coach who previously worked with Serero at Ajax Cape Town, confirmed the impending move this week.
Speaking to reporters, Ertugral stated, “He went back to the Emirates briefly to sort out a few things, but he is definitely a solution for us.
However, he won’t be playing against Orlando Pirates.”
Why Serero Won’t Be Joining Kaizer Chiefs
Despite being linked with Kaizer Chiefs in the past, Serero’s move to the Naturena-based club now seems highly unlikely.
Chiefs have already secured the signing of Bafana Bafana midfielder Thabo Cele, while Gaston Sirino has been in impressive form.
Given their current squad depth, bringing in another playmaker like Serero might not be a priority for the club.
Getting Ready for His New Challenge
Ertugral further revealed that Serero is currently finalizing personal arrangements before officially linking up with his new teammates.
“He needs to sort out his family matters, bring them back, and then he will likely return over the weekend.
Hopefully, he will be ready for the next game against AmaZulu,” he added.
A Long-Awaited PSL Comeback
Serero, who last played in the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) nearly 14 years ago, has a wealth of experience from his time in Europe and the Middle East.
Fans are now wondering whether he still has what it takes to make a significant impact in the league.
Can Serero Still Make a Difference in the PSL?
With his technical ability, vision, and experience, Serero could still be a valuable asset to any PSL team.
However, it remains to be seen if he can adapt to the fast-paced nature of South African football after such a long absence.
