Cape Town City FC deal KILLER blow to Kaizer Chiefs’ CAF dreams

Cape Town City FC took a giant step towards qualifying for next season’s CAF Champions League when their beat TS Galaxy at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday.

Cape Town City moved to 48 points after 28 matches and now lie six points ahead of fourth-placed Kaizer Chiefs, albeit having played one more match.

The team that finishes second in the standings will join already-qualified champions Mamelodi Sundowns as Mzansi’s two representatives in the CAF Champions League next season.

The third place finisher will join Marumo Gallants in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Marumo Gallants qualified by virtue of reaching the Nedbank Cup final. Win or lose that match, they will qualify for African competition in 2022/23 due to the fact their opponents, Mamelodi Sundowns, have already qualified for the CAF Champions League.

Kaizer Chiefs may well have to beat Mamelodi Sundowns in their blockbuster DStv Premiership clash at the FNB Stadium on Sunday, 8 May (17:30) to stay in the hunt for a CAF Champions League spot.

Failing that, the second-tier CAF Confederations Cup route may be their only hope.
