This weekend, South Africans are being called to show solidarity with cancer patients as the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) launches its 24th annual Shavathon campaign.

The initiative, which has become a landmark event in the country’s fight against cancer, encourages participants to shave, spray, or stencil their hair in support of those undergoing treatment and coping with hair loss.

Shaving and Spraying for a Cause

At Shavathon 2026, participants have several ways to take part.

You can choose to shave your head entirely or get creative with temporary sprays and stencils in a variety of colours.

The campaign is themed “Be Courageous,” highlighting the bravery of cancer patients and their supporters.

This year, events will run on Saturday, 28 February, and Sunday, 1 March 2026 at malls nationwide, including:

Most events are expected to run from 09:00 to 15:00, welcoming participants of all ages.

Every Snip Makes a Difference

Donations for participating are set at R50 per adult and R25 for children under 12.

Limited edition CANSA headwear is available for R60 while stocks last.

Participants who donate hair of 25 centimetres or longer receive a certificate of appreciation, with all locks used to create wigs for cancer patients — helping them regain confidence and a sense of normalcy during treatment.

Makoma Raolane, CANSA’s National Sustainability Manager, emphasized the campaign’s emotional significance: “For people facing cancer, the loss of their hair is often emotional and difficult. It can affect confidence, dignity and overall wellbeing.

Our Shavathon was created to show those affected by cancer that they are not alone – every snip, every spray, and every donation sends a powerful message of compassion and support.”

Supporting Cancer Patients Beyond the Salon

Hair loss can be a devastating side effect of cancer treatment, affecting patients’ self-esteem and mental wellbeing.

Shavathon provides both a visible show of support and a tangible contribution, empowering survivors and those currently undergoing treatment.

CANSA’s wig program ensures that hair donations directly benefit patients, offering them comfort and a way to reclaim their identity during a challenging time.

How to Join In

If you’re ready to participate, head to your nearest Shavathon event at a participating mall this weekend.

Donations, hair contributions, and even just showing up to cheer on participants all make a difference.

What’s Next

Following the weekend events, CANSA will continue its work creating wigs and providing resources for cancer patients nationwide.

The campaign also raises awareness about the emotional impact of cancer treatment, encouraging communities to rally around patients and their families.

Those who participate or donate this weekend contribute directly to the comfort and dignity of survivors.

Summary

CANSA’s 24th annual Shavathon campaign invites South Africans to support cancer patients through hair shaving, spraying, or donating hair.

The weekend-long event, running on 28 February and 1 March 2026 at selected malls nationwide, encourages donations and promotes mental wellbeing for those experiencing hair loss during treatment.

Participants can also purchase limited edition headwear, while hair donations contribute to wig-making programs for survivors.

The campaign, themed “Be Courageous,” underscores that every act of support, from a snip to a donation, makes a meaningful impact in the fight against cancer.
