Camilla Welcomes Seriously-Ill Children to Decorate Christmas Tree and Meet Santa at Clarence House in London

Camilla, 77, brought the festive spirit to Clarence House today, hosting her 20th annual Christmas party for seriously-ill children from Helen & Douglas House in Oxfordshire and Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity.

The event was filled with laughter, excitement, and even a few surprises—including a special visit from Santa Claus, his reindeer, and the historic State Sleigh.

A Warm Welcome From Santa

The young guests were met at the foot of the stairs by Santa himself, who presented two squeaky toys for Camilla’s dogs, Moley and Bluebell.

“There’s nothing you can buy for the Queen,” Santa joked, before handing over the gifts from Mrs Claus.

The children’s eyes lit up at the magical scene, setting the tone for an unforgettable afternoon.

Decorating the Tree With the Queen

Some of the children, including Samuel Soremekun, six, who has sickle cell disease and autism, and Alice Robertshaw, four, with SMA Type 1, helped decorate the Clarence House Christmas tree.

Samuel greeted Camilla with a deep bow and a hug, while Alice gifted her a handmade decorative jar.

Children in wheelchairs and on foot alike joined in, carefully placing ornaments and adding their personal touches to the festive centerpiece.

Royal Traditions and Special Helpers

Major Rob Treasure, the incoming equerry, helped for the first time, using his ceremonial sword to hang decorations chosen by the children.

He was joined by Major Ollie Plunket, both serving officers with her regiment, the Rifles.

Their participation added another layer of tradition to the party, delighting both young guests and onlookers.

Festive Lunch and Personal Touches

After decorating, Camilla served a Christmas lunch of sausages, mashed potatoes, and peas arranged in smiley faces.

She personally walked around the room with a gravy boat, offering help to the children while chatting warmly with their parents and carers.

Meanwhile, adults enjoyed smaller portions of the festive meal accompanied by a glass of champagne.

A Celebration of Kindness and Community

David Whittingham, chief executive of Helen & Douglas House, addressed the gathering after lunch, describing the event as “a celebration of community, kindness, and hope.”

He thanked Camilla for welcoming children to Clarence House for two decades.

In response, Camilla reflected on the annual tradition: “To me, it’s the start of Christmas.

I realise it’s about to happen when I see you all here, and I’m so proud to be patron of two wonderful charities.

They do so much for the children and their families; they’re literally lifesavers.”

A Magical Garden Experience

The festive fun didn’t stop indoors. Outside, the children were introduced to reindeer Blitzen and Dancer and got to feed them lichen.

They also had the rare chance to sit with Camilla in the back of Queen Victoria’s State Sleigh, a historic carriage recently restored for the Germany State Visit.

The sleigh, originally designed by Prince Albert, gave the youngsters a magical glimpse into royal history, leaving smiles and memories that will last a lifetime.
