CAF Confederation Cup: Will Orlando Pirates add their name to THIS winners’ list?

The CAF Confederation Cup is an annual club competition organised by CAF since 2004.

Clubs qualify for the competition based on their performance in their national league and cup competitions.

It is the second-tier competition of African club football, ranking below the CAF Champions League.

The winner of the tournament faces the winner of the CAF Champions League in the following season’s CAF Super Cup.

In 2004, the CAF Confederation Cup was founded as the merger of the CAF Cup and the African Cup Winners’ Cup.

Much like the CAF Champions League, the competition has also been dominated by North African sides, with 13 (of the 18) titles to date being won by the region.

There has yet to be a South African winner with Orlando Pirates losing 2-1 on aggregate to Tunisia’s Etoile du Sahel in 2015 and SuperSport United falling short by the same scoreline against the DR Congo’s TP Mazembe in 2017.

Will the Buccaneers put an end to that CAF Confederation Cup title drought on Friday, 20 May against RS Berkane of Morocco?
