A British man’s holiday in Spain has taken a tragic turn after he was the victim of an unprovoked attack, leaving him with life-altering injuries.
Marshall Latham, a retired carpenter from Nantwich, Cheshire, was out for a walk in Fuerteventura on December 10, 2024, when he was punched by an unknown assailant.
The unexpected blow caused him to fall and hit his head on the pavement, knocking him unconscious.
Doctors are now saying the 68-year-old may never recover from the traumatic brain injury he sustained.
A Fight for Survival
After the attack, Latham was rushed to the hospital in Puerto del Rosario where he was intubated, ventilated, and had a CT scan revealing two skull fractures and a brain bleed.
Unfortunately, the local hospital wasn’t equipped to handle such severe injuries, so he was transferred to a specialized hospital in Gran Canaria.
Despite being told multiple times that he might not survive the night, Latham is still fighting.
He remains in critical condition, unable to regain full consciousness, though there have been some small signs of movement.
The Arrest of the Suspect
In a twist, the suspect in the assault was arrested while attempting to board a flight to Glasgow.
The man, who was reportedly thrown out of a bar on the same night as the attack, was apprehended on a plane.
Authorities are still investigating the case, though it remains unclear whether the suspect has been remanded in custody or released on bail.
Latham’s family is seeking justice, and a GoFundMe campaign has been set up to support legal fees and raise awareness.
A Community’s Support
Latham’s friend, Neil Cooper, who created the GoFundMe page, shared how devastating the situation has been for those close to him. “He didn’t deserve this,” Cooper said.
“It was just a case of him being in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
The page has raised over £8,000 of its £20,000 target so far, with more than 170 people contributing.
The funds will help cover legal expenses as Latham
‘s family works with Spanish lawyers to bring the attacker to justice.
A Heartfelt Call for Justice
Latham’s brother-in-law, Jim Casey, spoke with local media, explaining that Marshall and his partner, Lynn, had visited Fuerteventura multiple times before and were simply on holiday when the attack occurred.
The assault was completely unprovoked, and witnesses have confirmed there was no prior argument.
Despite the trauma, the support from family, friends, and even local officials has been overwhelming.
Local councillor Allen Gage expressed his solidarity with Latham, emphasizing the need for justice and supporting the community fundraiser.
Latham’s story has captured the hearts of many, and while his recovery remains uncertain, those who know him are determined to see that the person responsible faces the consequences.
The fight for justice continues, and the community stands behind Latham, hoping for a positive outcome despite the overwhelming odds.
