Over the years, several players have taken the bold step of playing for both Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, stirring mixed emotions from fans.
Though it’s often frowned upon, transfers between these two iconic clubs do happen, but usually not in a direct manner.
The Unlikely Switches and Free Agent Moves
While some players might cross over directly from one club to the other, it’s typically as a free agent.
The first modern example of a player being traded between Chiefs and Pirates for a transfer fee was Bongani Sam.
In recent years, however, we’ve seen several other players face the wrath of either fanbase for making the switch.
Khuzwayo’s Controversial Move from Chiefs to Pirates
One of the most talked-about moves between the two Soweto giants was that of Brilliant Khuzwayo.
Khuzwayo made the switch from Kaizer Chiefs to Orlando Pirates, a move that caused quite a stir, especially considering the emotional backlash from Amakhosi supporters.
Unfortunately, for Khuzwayo, his career at Pirates was marred by an unfortunate ankle injury that prevented him from ever stepping onto the pitch for the Buccaneers.
As a result, while he technically signed with Pirates, he never had the chance to play for them.
How the Move Unfolded
Khuzwayo recently opened up about how the transfer unfolded.
He shared that, a year before his contract with Chiefs ended, he spoke with Dr. Irvin Khoza, the chairman of Orlando Pirates.
He then informed Bobby Motaung, Chiefs’ sporting director, that he wasn’t going to renew his contract.
After further discussions with the Motaung family and coach Steve Komphela, Khuzwayo’s decision was clear, but he couldn’t reveal where he was heading at the time.
Chiefs Fans and Khuzwayo’s Move
For Chiefs fans, the emotional impact of Khuzwayo joining their archrivals will never be forgotten.
Even though he never played a competitive match for Pirates, the move remains a sore topic.
So, Chiefs fans, how did you feel when Khuzwayo made the switch to Pirates? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
