Breaking: PDP Governorship Aspirant’s Plea for Release of Local Government Funds to Combat Poverty

In a call for action, Dotun Babayemi, a governorship aspirant from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has voiced out the urgent need for state governors to ensure the direct allocation of funds to local governments. The aim is to ease the economic hardship faced by Nigeria at the grassroots level, particularly in the backdrop of the country’s current economic instability.

Babayemi’s appeal was made during the distribution of cheques to members of the ‘Atunto’ cooperative society, a grassroots initiative based in Iwo, Ola-Oluwa, and Ayedire Local Government Council Areas. He stressed the importance of these funds, especially in the context of the economic difficulties that Nigeria is grappling with, that disproportionately affect grassroots businesses.

‘Atunto’ Cooperative Society: A Beacon of Hope

The ‘Atunto’ cooperative society, which Babayemi spoke on behalf of, has amassed a fund of N320 million. The objective of these funds is to aid local businesses to weather the economic turbulence and to stave off poverty among citizens. Established in Osogbo on December 6th, 2023, the cooperative strives to comprehend and address the economic development challenges and priorities of rural areas.

The President of the cooperative, Emmanuel Moye, expressed that the cooperative movement is a crucial survival strategy in the face of the country’s economic trials. He upholds the belief that initiatives such as these are instrumental in providing sustainable solutions that will benefit the grassroots.

This sentiment is echoed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, who underscores the importance of leadership in driving sustainable initiatives that are beneficial to the grassroots.
