Black Coffee – real name Nkosinathi Maphumulo – beat the likes of Major Lazer, DJ Marshmello and others. The 46-year-old star was joined by his eldest son Esona at the awards, who proudly accompanied his dad on stage.
Also from Mzansi was Grammys host Trevor Noah who also had South Africans jumping for joy from the living rooms.
BLACK COFFEE USES WIN TO INSPIRE AND ENCOURAGE OTHERS
In his acceptance speech, Black Coffee hinted at the death of close friend Riky Rick, who ended his life after committing suicide in February.
He said: “I want to thank God for the gift of music and being able to share it with the world, and heal some souls and whatever they’re going through in life.”
In his official Grammy interview, Black Coffee expressed his shock and sheer delight at his win.
He said: “First nomination, first Grammy, unbelievable!
“At first it was intentional to create an album that would be recognised on this level, being someone who comes from South Africa or Africa. Most of our artists are always categorised together whether in “African” or “world music” [categories].
“So I was very intentional about wanting to do this album to compete on a global scale with people I think are my peers”.
Black Coffee also used his win to inspire others back home.
He continued: “African kids who are watching; they may think they don’t stand a chance to get on a global stage like this. I want to just say to them that it is possible. The award is not just for me, and it’s not just about music alone, this is about anything that they want to do. This Grammy is a symbol of that, that it’s possible to get here”.
TWEEPS REACT: ‘BLACK KING ENERGY’
Black Coffee soon found his name trending on Twitter as did the words “Congratulations Grootman”.
Tweeps took to the platform to praise the star for his momentous win for himself and the country
“A little boy named Nkosinathi Innocent Sizwe Maphumulo from KZN province grew up to become a Grammy winner. Black child, it is possible!”
“Black Coffee brought his son as his plus one. Not a friend, not a girlfriend, but his first born son. Only for his son to witness him win a Grammy award. Nah, that’s black king energy man”
“Black Coffee is such an inspiration. His journey just proves that anything is POSSIBLE as long as you work hard”
“Black Coffee’s career is nothing short of inspirational. What a legend”
