Bayer Leverkusen agree deal to sign Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah in major transfer move from Anfield to Germany

In a summer already packed with big moves and emotional farewells, Liverpool fans are now preparing to say goodbye to one of their homegrown talents.

Jarell Quansah, a product of the club’s academy, is on his way to Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth up to £35 million.

A Big Step for Quansah in Germany

The 22-year-old defender, who’s currently shining for England at the Under-21 European Championship, will be signing a contract with Leverkusen that runs until 2030.

The agreement includes an initial £30 million fee, plus £5 million in potential add-ons — and notably, Liverpool have inserted a buy-back clause into the deal.

Quansah’s move marks a new chapter in his career, trading Anfield for the Bundesliga, where he’ll now be coached by former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag.

Liverpool Begin the Search for New Defensive Talent

With Quansah on his way out, Liverpool’s focus has already shifted to securing a new young centre-back.

Arne Slot, fresh off a Premier League-winning debut season, is eyeing reinforcements in that position to build for the future.

The club has had their eyes on several promising defenders over the past year.

They scouted Leny Yoro before his move to Manchester United, and also looked into Dean Huijsen, who ended up at Real Madrid.

Targets Include Guehi and Ajax Starlet Hato

One of the top names on Liverpool’s current radar is Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.

However, Guehi may not be available right away, as reports suggest he’s content to stay at Selhurst Park for the final year of his contract.

Meanwhile, Ajax’s Jorrel Hato is another option.

At just 19, Hato offers versatility — able to play as either a centre-back or a left-back — making him an intriguing option for Slot’s tactical setup.

A Farewell to a Loyal Red

Jarell Quansah’s exit is a bittersweet one for the Anfield faithful.

The Warrington-born defender joined the Liverpool academy at the age of five and made his way up through the ranks to the senior squad.

Across 58 appearances, he scored three goals and was part of title-winning squads in both the Premier League and the League Cup.

Though he’s leaving now, the buy-back clause signals that Liverpool haven’t ruled out a future reunion — a move fans would surely welcome should he flourish in the Bundesliga.

Busy Transfer Window at Anfield

Quansah isn’t the only one leaving Merseyside this summer.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has made a high-profile move to Real Madrid, while backup goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has signed with Brentford.

That said, Liverpool aren’t just selling. They’ve also made waves by snapping up Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong — both from Leverkusen — continuing what’s been a busy summer of dealings between the two clubs.

Spotlight on Quansah at the Euros

Before he officially links up with Leverkusen, Quansah has one more big task ahead — helping England’s Under-21s chase European glory.

He’s been a consistent starter throughout the tournament and will be back in action on Wednesday when England face the Netherlands in the semi-finals.

It’s a fitting send-off for a player who has grown up in red but now begins a bold new adventure in black and red.
