A woman who had been arrested in South Africa’s North West province gave birth to a healthy baby girl inside Assen police station after going into labour while waiting for an ambulance.
Police officers assisted the woman during the unexpected delivery, with support from an 80-year-old local resident, as emergency medical services were on their way.
The incident occurred on Thursday, according to North West police spokesperson Sergeant Kelebogile Morake.
Arrested Woman Goes Into Labour While in Police Custody
Morake said officers were on duty when they received a telephone call concerning a female suspect at the Msholozi informal settlement in Kameeldrift.
Two constables responded to the report and arrested the woman. She was reportedly in good health at the time, with no visible injuries.
The officers subsequently took her to Assen police station, where the situation changed when she began experiencing labour pains.
Police Officers Assist With Delivery as Ambulance Is Called
Recognising that the woman was in labour, officers immediately called for an ambulance and helped her while awaiting its arrival.
Morake said the delivery took place under the supervision of Marijke van der Walt, an 80-year-old resident who was present and offered assistance during the emergency.
The woman gave birth to a healthy baby girl at approximately 4.15pm inside the police station.
Mother and Newborn Taken for Medical Assessment
The ambulance arrived shortly after the child was born, and both mother and baby were transported to a medical facility for further examination and care.
Police confirmed that the pair were taken for medical assessment following the delivery, although no further details about their condition were provided in the statement.
North West Police Commissioner Praises Officers
North West provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Arthur Peter Adams commended the officers involved for their response to the unexpected childbirth.
Morake said Adams praised the members for their speed, professionalism and compassion in assisting the woman during a critical moment.
According to the police spokesperson, the commissioner viewed the incident as an example of the values expected of the police service.
Police Highlight Duty to Serve Vulnerable People
Adams said the officers’ actions demonstrated the commitment of the South African Police Service to protecting and serving everyone in the community, including people in vulnerable circumstances.
The incident highlighted how officers can be required to respond to urgent medical situations while carrying out their regular duties.
The successful delivery at Assen police station brought an unexpected turn to the woman’s time in custody, with officers and a local resident working together until emergency medical assistance arrived.
