A police watchdog investigates the fatal shooting of a man in his twenties by armed officers in south London after a car chase.






Officers pursued a car until it was stopped after ‘tactical contact’
At approximately 9:51 p.m., a man was shot in Kirkstall Gardens, Streatham Hill.
Shortly after midnight, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
After a shooting, Met has referred itself to the Independent Office of Police Conduct.
The police watchdog has opened an investigation after a man in his twenties was fatally shot during a chase in south London.
Last night at approximately 9:51 p.m., a car was brought to a stop following “tactical contact” in the Kirkstall Gardens neighborhood of Streatham Hill.
The man sustained a gunshot wound as specialist officers fired at the vehicle, according to a statement released by the Metropolitan Police.
The man was offered first aid at the site before being brought to the hospital, but he was pronounced dead soon before midnight.
Following the incident, the Metropolitan Police submitted themselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), and police cordons remain in place today.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct issued the following statement: “The IOPC has commenced an independent inquiry into an incident involving armed officers from the Metropolitan Police in Lambeth, south London, last night.”
‘At this early point, it is thought that a man was fatally shot during the police reaction to complaints of a suspicious car,’ the report states.
We were told by the MPS of the occurrence just after 11 p.m., and shortly before midnight we initiated an independent investigation.
‘IOPC investigators were dispatched to the incident scene and post-incident procedures to collect evidence.

A 39-year-old New Park Road resident who requested anonymity stated, “The motorist drove up New Park Road and turned up Kirkstall Gardens.” A police car traveling down Kirkstall Gardens struck him.
‘Another police vehicle arrived behind him, and he was placed under arrest at the bottom of Kirkstall Gardens. When he was shot, the vehicle was stopped.
He added, ‘The explosion was extremely loud. I was at home wearing gaming headphones when I heard it.
A Kirkstall Gardens resident who preferred to remain anonymous added, “I heard a loud noise and then I came outside.” I could see the blue lights and a chopper from inside. There were numerous police officers present.
‘It appeared as though someone was on the floor and they were attempting to assist them. I’ve been in this area for over a year and have never encountered anything similar.
A second resident of the man stated, “I heard what sounded like one or two gunshots followed by a great deal of ruckus.” ‘I noticed some police cars, and then the hubbub subsided rapidly.’
Residents of Streatham Hill asserted that officers administered CPR to the perpetrator after shooting him.
A representative for the Metropolitan Police Department stated, “At 9:51 p.m. on Monday, September 5th, specialized weapons officers were pursuing a suspect car in the area of Lambeth.”
“The vehicle was halted after a tactical encounter at Kirkstall Gardens, Streatham Hill.” A law enforcement weapon was discharged.
A gunshot wound was sustained by a man thought to be in his 20s, who was a passenger in the suspect vehicle.
“London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance were requested,” continued the Met statement. Prior to their arrival, officers gave first aid and transported the man to the hospital, where he died at 12:16 a.m.

It comes after a man was fatally shot in High Street Kensington early on Sunday morning.
Maximillian Kusi-Owusu, a drill rapper known as M Lo, was shot at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday. Officers who responded to the scene administered first aid, but he was pronounced dead at 5:32 a.m.
The rapper, who has been hailed as “very skilled” and “dynamic,” was honored with tributes.
Yesterday, a man arrested in connection with the shooting was released on bail.
