The announcement of Pope Leo XIV’s upcoming apostolic visit to Cameroon has been met with deep gratitude and excitement by the local Church.

Archbishop Andrew Fuanya Nkea of the Bamenda Archdiocese described the visit as an “unexpected moment of grace” for the nation, emphasizing that such a decision can only be understood as part of divine providence.

Speaking at a press conference on March 20, Archbishop Nkea shared his thoughts on the significance of the visit, scheduled from April 15 to 18, 2026, and highlighted the Church’s preparations for welcoming the Holy Father.

A Personal Connection with the New Pontiff

Archbishop Nkea recalled that the relationship between the Cameroonian Church and Pope Leo XIV began shortly after the pontiff’s installation on May 18, 2025.

A delegation of six Cameroonian bishops attended the ceremony in Rome, which laid the groundwork for a warm and cordial connection.

“From that moment, we have enjoyed a very cordial relationship with the new Holy Father,” Nkea said, noting that while speculation about a papal visit circulated last year, it was only formally confirmed by the Holy See in March 2026.

God’s Choice: Why Cameroon?

When asked why Cameroon was chosen as a destination, the archbishop acknowledged the surprise it brought to Church leaders.

“Why Cameroon? I will say to you that it is God. Nobody truly understands why the pope is coming here,” Nkea explained.

He emphasized that the invitation process involved both the Church and the state, with Nkea personally delivering letters of congratulations and invitation to the pope in Rome.

The Vatican later requested a formal invitation from the Cameroonian government, as the pope serves as both the spiritual leader of the Catholic Church and the head of Vatican City.

“He is coming here as the spiritual leader of all Catholics and as the head of state of the Vatican,” Nkea clarified.

The Visit’s Theme and Message

The overarching theme of the visit, “May They All Be One,” reflects Cameroon’s current social and political challenges, including ethnic divisions, political unrest, and regional violence.

“This oneness has nothing to do with politics,” Nkea stressed.

“It is about the human person, the Church, and the call to love one another.”

Each city on the pope’s itinerary will focus on a specific message:

  • Bamenda: “My Peace I Leave You, My Peace I Give You,” addressing regions affected by unrest.
  • Douala: “Give Them Yourselves Something to Eat… Don’t Wait for Somebody Else,” highlighting youth and unemployment.
  • Yaoundé: “Love and Truth Have Met, Justice and Peace Have Embraced,” emphasizing reconciliation and unity.

Planned Events and Inclusive Engagement

In Bamenda, Pope Leo XIV will meet a diverse group of people at St. Joseph Cathedral in Mankon, including traditional rulers, civil society leaders, local elites, members of Islamic and Protestant communities, internally displaced persons, and civil authorities.

Following this gathering, the pope will celebrate Mass at the Bamenda airport. Archbishop Nkea clarified that all passes for events are free and that no transactions are involved.

He also noted that infrastructural improvements, including airport renovations and street repairs, are underway to prepare for the visit.

Impact and Consequences

Archbishop Nkea expressed confidence that the pope’s visit will have a profound spiritual impact on the communities, especially in regions affected by prolonged unrest.

“The Holy Father cannot go anywhere without impacting the community,” he said.

He added that the visit has the potential to soften hearts hardened by years of conflict and to foster healing and reconciliation across Cameroon.

What’s Next?

The National Episcopal Conference of Cameroon (NECC) has coordinated the Church’s provinces to ensure a fitting reception for the pope.

Journalists have been encouraged to report objectively, focusing on the pastoral nature of the visit rather than political interpretations.

Preparations continue in Bamenda, Douala, and Yaoundé, with emphasis on welcoming Pope Leo XIV in a manner that reflects Cameroon’s rich diversity and cultural heritage.

Summary

Archbishop Nkea of Bamenda sees Pope Leo XIV’s April visit as a spiritually transformative moment for Cameroon.

With the theme “May They All Be One,” the visit seeks to promote peace, reconciliation, and unity.

Preparations are underway in three major cities, ensuring inclusive engagement for citizens from all walks of life.
