Anarchy in Durban, as locals LOOT a Shoprite truck

Fact Checked by TDPel News Desk

A  total of 443 people have died in the KZN floods this week, with over R1 billion’s worth of damage estimated across the province. The eThekwini Municipality has been badly affected, and this recent bout of extreme weather goes down as one of the worst natural disasters to ever hit Mzansi.

The government has stepped in to help residents across KZN. A state of disaster has been declared for the region, freeing up a war chest of disaster relief funds. However, there are concerns that not *all* this money will go where its needed, and politicians have been warned against using this tragedy to enrich themselves.

Unrest rears its head in Durban again

However, frustrations are already boiling over in some parts of the province. KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala has had to defend himself against accusations of favouritism, after he was adjudged to have sourced a municipal water delivery for his own home. The ANC member, however, has rejected these claims.

The seeds of discontent are rife across Durban. This was, after all, the hot-spot for the rioting and looting witnessed in July 2021. A mixture of poor living conditions, terrible service delivery, and political unrest helped spark a deadly wave of violence that claimed over 300 lives.

That failure to uphold the rule of law and order was on show yet again today. This clip, recorded at the M19 and Umgeni Road Interchange in Durban, shows how dozens of desperate punters descend upon the stationary vehicle.
