Several places in the country have been designated as ‘developing hotspots’ for Mzansi’s wealthiest citizens, according to the African Wealth Report. These four seaside resorts are luring South Africa’s High Net Worth Individuals (HNWIs), who are eschewing more well-known destinations in favor of some hidden treasures..
Revealed: The small towns turning heads in South Africa
Millionaires, according to a recently released survey, are looking to invest in locations that have yet to ‘pop.’ Hermanus, a moderately popular tourist destination in the Western Cape, has become a new favorite among HNWIs after being dubbed ‘the safest town in SA,’ as we reported on Tuesday.
“Hermanus is the fastest-growing HNWI town in South Africa.” Over the last decade, a large number of rich residents from Cape Town, Pretoria, and Joburg have relocated to Hermanus. This would explain its appeal as the safest town in South Africa. Eastcliff, Voelklip, Kwaaiwater, Onrus, and Fernkloof are all affluent areas of Hermanus.”
The four small towns SA millionaires are eyeing up…
However, as any savvy investor will tell you, the next best thing has yet to be discovered: Hermanus’ stock has been steadily rising for the past decade, and other tiny towns offer even more attractive chances. As a result, the African Wealth Report has identified four ’emerging hotspots’ for wealthy South Africans.
- Keurboomstrand on the Garden Route, in the Western Cape
- Zinkwazi Beach on the north coast, in KwaZulu-Natal
- Kenton-on-Sea on the Sunshine Coast, in the Eastern Cape
- Umdloti on the north coast, in KwaZulu-Natal

Keurboomstrand
This gorgeous slice of paradise can be found on the outskirts of Plettenberg Bay, and as the elite members of South African society continue to arrive in the region, Keurboomstrand is being touted as an ideal destination.

Zinkwazi Beach
The smallest region on the list sits in the iLembe district, and boasts all the scenic beauty of Durban, but with added tranquility and fewer people on the beachfront. Sounds like a good combo to us!

Kenton-on-Sea
This town is situated right in between East London and Gqeberha. But given its picturesque setting, the millionaires making their moves here won’t be in a hurry to jump onto the N2 again…

Umdloti
This seafront suburb sits to the north of Durban, and from mid-winter to early summer, Umdloti is a prime location for dolphin-spotting. Already a firm tourist favourite, the town is now showing up on some very wealthy radars.

Where are the rich and elite living?
Johannesburg has the greatest concentration of millionaires in South Africa as of April 2022. The Cape Whale Coast is the fastest-growing region, whereas Mzansi’s top five ‘richest districts’ are the Mother City, Durban, the Cape Winelands, and the Garden Route.
