Administrative Arrangements Agreement for the deployment of the European Union Observation Mission (EU-EOM) to the General Elections of 2022 was signed by Mrs. ‘Mats’epo Molise-Ramakoae, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations

The Administrative Arrangements Agreement between the Government of Lesotho and the European Delegation for the deployment of the European Union Observation Mission (EU-EOM) to the General Elections of 2022 was signed by Mrs. ‘Mats’epo Molise-Ramakoae, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations.

The minister said in his remarks at the agreement’s signing that this is a historic project for Lesotho because it will be the first time the nation hosts an EU-EOM.

Mrs. Ramakoae praised the EU Ambassador and expressed her sincere hope that the Mission will be able to carry out its mandate without any obstacles as a result of signing the Agreement.

The European Union has also started a campaign to encourage Basotho to register for the next general elections.

There are around two weeks remaining for voter registration.

In terms of worldwide election observation, the EU is a credible and well-known participant.

In more than 60 countries since 2000, the EU has sent out over 160 Election Observation Missions (EOMs).

The mission of the EU Election Observation Missions states that promoting democracy around the world is not only in line with the EU’s core values but also in our best interests and an essential component of our foreign policy.

The needs, expectations, and aspirations of its citizens can only be met by a functioning democracy.

EU Election Observation Missions strengthen our relationships with our alliance nations, supporting them in their pursuit of meeting their international human rights duties.

Election observation is a continual process that requires regular evaluation and improvement, and it is not just a one-day job.

Without equal opportunity for all candidates, fair competition, freedom of speech, assembly, and association, respect for human rights, and an impartial, independent election management authority, a democratic election is not complete.

It is projected that the general elections in Lesotho will take place in October.
