Navigating the film industry often comes with unexpected experiences, and Anna Kendrick recently opened up about a particularly embarrassing moment she faced as an actress.
During a live taping for the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the 39-year-old star reflected on a time when a director humiliated her in front of a large group of extras.
An Unforgettable Note
When prompted about the worst direction she’s ever received, Anna recounted a scenario involving an unnamed director who asked her to improvise a scene.
After encouraging her to “make something up,” she delivered her lines, only to be publicly critiqued as the director abruptly called for a return to the script.
“It felt like a very specific power move,” Anna described, recalling the icky sensation of being embarrassed in front of 100 extras.
“It was as if he was trying to assert dominance over me, and it was uncomfortable.”
The Irony of Success
Despite the director’s harsh feedback, the improvised moment ended up in the film’s trailer, leading Anna to humorously declare, “So, f*ck you!”
Her story drew audible gasps from the live audience, highlighting the shared sentiment of disbelief over her experience.
A New Chapter in Directing
Anna Kendrick has appeared in over 40 films, including Twilight, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and A Simple Favor.
Recently, she made her directorial debut with the Netflix crime thriller Woman of the Hour, based on the chilling true story of serial killer Rodney Alcala, who appeared on The Dating Game in 1978 while he was actively committing murders.
In this film, Anna portrays Cheryl Bradshaw, the game show contestant who becomes entangled in Alcala’s sinister narrative, played by Daniel Zovatto.
During the time of the show, Alcala had already claimed the lives of at least five women, earning him the notorious nickname of “The Dating Game Killer.”
Drawing from Personal Experience
In a recent interview, Anna shared that one particularly bizarre moment in Woman of the Hour was inspired by a real-life incident she experienced at just 19 years old.
During her appearance on The View, she discussed a scene set in a casting office where a male director made a very inappropriate comment about her body.
“There’s a moment where they ask me if I do nudity, and one of the men stares directly at my chest and says, ‘I’m sure they’re fine,’” she recalled.
This line, taken verbatim from her own past, prompted Anna to include it in the film.
“I thought, ‘Oh, do you guys mind saying this thing?’ and while I wasn’t sure I would keep it in, it ended up being funny.
We can all laugh at my humiliation, and that’s fine!”
Looking Ahead
Anna Kendrick’s journey in the entertainment industry is filled with both triumphs and trials.
As she continues to explore her creative talents, fans eagerly anticipate what she will bring to the screen next.
