In a devastating incident, approximately five individuals met a tragic end in a boat mishap along the River Niger in Anambra State.

The heart-wrenching event unfolded in the early hours of the previous day, casting a somber shadow over the waterways.

Rescue Efforts Amidst the Tragedy

Despite the grim turn of events, there emerged a glimmer of hope as thirty passengers, predominantly comprising women and children, were successfully rescued from the perilous situation.

The ill-fated journey had originated from the riverine areas of Kogi, with Onitsha as its intended destination. The victims, laden with merchandise, were abruptly caught in the unforgiving currents of the river.

Location of the Incident

The boat mishap occurred within the riverine expanse of Anambra East local government area, adding to the challenges faced by the affected passengers.

Official Confirmation and Ongoing Investigation

DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, the Public Relations Officer of the state police command, provided official confirmation of the tragic incident.

Swiftly responding to a distress call, marine operatives of the police executed a rescue operation, managing to save over 30 lives. Regrettably, five lifeless bodies were recovered from the depths of the sea, intertwined with the wreckage of the capsized boat.

Tochukwu emphasized that the ill-fated boat, originating from Kogi state, was tasked with transporting both goods and passengers.

The investigation into the cause of this calamity is currently underway, seeking to unravel the circumstances leading to the unfortunate boat mishap.
