A police dog who survived three headshots and kept working is honored

A police canine that survived being shot three times in the head has been honored for a lifetime of service.

During his seven-and-a-half years of service with the Humberside Police, the devoted canine, described by his handler as “my soulmate,” has “never missed a day of work.”

Logan, an eight-and-a-half-year-old retired police dog who will retire in 2020, received the recognition at the Thin Blue Paw Awards on Thursday, to the delight of his owner and former handler, PC Ian Sweeney.

Three times Logan was shot in the mouth and head while trying to defend his handler, but he miraculously survived.

Sweeney stated, “Logan is my soulmate, and I am so proud of all he has accomplished.

Logan has assisted in hundreds of tracks and arrests, saved numerous lives, kept the peace at events, and ensured the safety of the general public.

This award is particularly remarkable since it recognizes all of his accomplishments, and I don’t believe anyone ever truly believes they’ll accomplish anything like that!

Logan, who retired in 2020 at the age of eight and a half, is featured here with his owner and former handler, PC Ian Sweeney.

On Thursday, Logan earned a lifetime achievement award at the Thin Blue Paw Awards.

Logan joined the Humberside Police as a 10-month-old from the South Yorkshire Police breeding program in January 2015, although he had received no training prior to being teamed with PC Sweeney. He certified as a weapons support dog in 2017.

52-year-old PC Sweeney from North East Lincolnshire has 28 years of experience as a police officer, including 13 years with the dog section.

“Typically, it takes roughly 13 weeks to train a general-purpose police canine, but Logan was trained and licensed in only eight weeks, and we hit the streets in May 2015!”

I’ve never met a dog quite like him when it came to smell detection and tracking. He had a flawless career; he was extremely versatile, and he consistently passed all of his exams and never made a mistake. He was the ideal pet.

Three times Logan was shot in the mouth and head while trying to defend his handler, but he miraculously survived.

Kieran Stanbridge, a charity trustee, remarked, “Logan spent almost seven years fighting crime, sniffing out evil criminals, assisting in locating vulnerable people, and keeping his town safe; his list of accomplishments is amazing.”

The lengthy list of Logan’s accomplishments made it easy for the Thin Blue Paw Awards judges to recognize him as the deserving recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Despite being shot three times in the head, the wounds were amazingly superficial, meaning they did not penetrate the skull, so a veterinarian treated the injuries and allowed them to heal on their own.

For his loyal dedication in the line of duty, Logan received the Heart of the Community Award and the North East Region 2 National Bravery Award.

The German Shepherd was recognized during the ceremony sponsored by Animal Friends Insurance.
