According to a phone call intercepted by Ukraine’s security agencies, Russia is apparently deploying a second line of troops behind the front line to shoot down any Russian soldiers attempting to flee conflict.
The five-minute audio tape, which was provided by Ukraine’s intelligence service, appears to capture the internal discord among Vladimir Putin’s forces during their invasion of Ukraine, with some supposedly being obliged to execute any deserters.
In the tape, which Ukraine alleges as an intercepted phone call between a Russian soldier and his wife, the man explains that his superior has instructed him to ‘take out’ any Russian forces who abandon the front line.
The Russian soldier stated that the front line is filled with new recruits, many of whom are prisoners, and that his unit has been positioned to shoot anyone who attempts to flee.
In the purportedly intercepted phone call, the Russian soldier informs his wife, ‘They shifted us back to the second line, there’s gunfire up ahead, but we’re back in the trenches for the time being.
They transported the prisoners from the prison to the front of the line. And we’re sitting here as a detachment blocking retreat, f**k.’
He continued, “If somebody returns, we will eliminate them.”
His spouse replies, “What a nightmare!”
The Russian soldier said, ‘That’s how we’ve arranged it. We are stationed on the second line, guarding the front line. Behind us is an additional line.
If you choose that path, you will likewise fail. Therefore, it is impossible to flee. We execute our own.
If someone follows that path, they must be eradicated.
It is unclear where the Russian soldier is stationed, but he detailed tough living conditions in which it was difficult to acquire food and keep warm.
Russian soldiers complain about equipment shortages, bad housing conditions, and inadequate training for new recruits.
Since Putin announced the mobilization of 300,000 Russians on September 21, independent media, human rights activists, and those drafted have painted a bleak picture of a haphazard and chaotic effort to round up as many men as possible and rush them to the front lines, regardless of skill, training, or equipment.
Protests against conscription were violently suppressed, and tens of thousands of men fled Russia to neighboring nations to avoid being drafted.
Wednesday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov acknowledged ongoing problems with equipment for draftees, but stated that “vigorous steps initiated to repair the situation are already producing the first good results.”
Putin has established a coordination council in which Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov is “personally responsible for this.” According to him, regional authorities are involved in providing “the missing equipment,” and Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov is “personally responsible for this” in the coordination council.
Multiple deaths of Ukrainian reservists were reported by Russian media, with family stating that they had received minimal training.
Putin said that training might last between 10 and 25 days in response to a reporter’s inquiry as to why some reservists had perished in Ukraine only three weeks after being mobilized.
According to military researcher Pavel Luzin, Russia cannot train hundreds of thousands of personnel. The army was not prepared to be mobilized. It was never ready for it,’ he stated.
Putin has pledged to complete the mobilization campaign by November, when the annual fall draft is slated to take place. According to military experts and rights groups, recruitment offices and training camps cannot process both simultaneously, and the call-up could restart months later.
Putin stated that 222,000 reservists have been recruited as of mid-October. Uncertain is if another 80,000 can be enlisted in the remaining two weeks.
In an effort to increase the number of potential recruits, the Russian parliament on Wednesday relaxed a bar on mobilizing males who have been convicted of a serious crime and freed from jail but whose convictions remain on file.
