Heartwarming Documentary Sheds Light on Family’s Journey at Children’s Hospice

In this heartfelt account, a father opens up about the remarkable life of his son, Kalel Woodward, who passed away at the tender age of 11 after enduring an unidentified medical condition.

Initially appearing as a normal baby, Kalel’s condition became evident when he struggled to lift his head at three months old.

At the age of two-and-a-half, he suffered a severe seizure, leading to a catastrophic brain injury that resulted in the loss of half his brain matter.

This left him peg-fed and on medication to manage his seizures, and doctors suspected he had muscular dystrophy due to the nature of his symptoms.

As Kalel grew older, his condition presented numerous challenges, including frequent bone fractures, seizures, and chest infections.

Despite the prognosis of a shorter life expectancy, Kalel defied the odds and spent another six years surrounded by his loving family, which included his brothers, Jake (now aged 11) and Louie (aged six).

The family was able to create cherished memories together at Derian House Children’s Hospice in Chorley, where they received exceptional care.

Paul, an actor and film producer, is set to feature this heartwarming story in a documentary titled ‘The Little Things’, providing an intimate glimpse into the lives of families, staff, and volunteers at the hospice.

Kalel passed away peacefully at home in May 2019, with his older brother Jake singing by his side.

Despite his numerous challenges, Kalel was a happy and joyful child, finding delight in simple things like the wind blowing his hair or the quacking of ducks.

He brought immense joy and love to his family, leaving an unforgettable mark on their lives.

Paul hopes that through the film, he can shatter misconceptions surrounding hospice care and showcase the importance of creating precious memories for families facing difficult times.

To bring this touching project to life, Paul and his film crew are crowdfunding to raise £11,000.

Filming commenced at Derian House, with plans to complete the documentary by early next year.

Paul’s film production company, Old Swan Films, aims to showcase the film at international festivals and secure a distributor.

Caroline Taylor, head of income, marketing, and communications at Derian House, expresses her gratitude for Paul’s generosity in shedding light on the hospice’s compassionate work.

Derian House, located in Chorley, Lancashire, offers care and support to over 400 babies, children, and young people, along with their families, from across the North West.

The hospice operates 24/7 and provides its services for free to families.

However, running the hospice costs £6 million annually, emphasizing the need for support to continue their vital work.
