A shocking court case has unfolded at Bulford Military Court, revealing disturbing accusations against a Household Cavalry trooper.
Joeli Ratu, 39, is facing serious allegations after a night of drinking with colleagues allegedly turned into a nightmare for one soldier’s partner.
A Night Out Turns Dark
According to the court, Ratu was socializing with fellow soldiers from the Army’s most senior unit when he prepared a potent alcoholic drink for one of his colleagues.
The concoction reportedly caused the soldier to pass out, leaving him vulnerable.
Ratu allegedly waited until his colleague was unconscious before sneaking into his flat at Hyde Park Barracks in Knightsbridge.
The Alleged Assault
The court heard that Ratu entered the flat while the colleague’s girlfriend was asleep, topless, in the bedroom.
He is accused of climbing on top of her, attempting to kiss her, grab her repeatedly, and insisting she engage in sexual activity with him.
The woman described the terrifying experience to the court, comparing Ratu’s behavior to “a cat trying to pounce” while she felt “like a mouse trapped in the corner.”
Despite her fear, she reportedly pushed him away and refused his advances.
The ordeal lasted around 20 minutes before Ratu allegedly left the room to retrieve her unconscious boyfriend.
Victim’s Perspective
The woman recounted the terrifying moments: waking to find a face over hers, realizing her boyfriend was missing, and feeling trapped.
She described trying to shield herself with her hands and remaining calm while Ratu advanced.
He allegedly insisted that she had no choice but to comply, claiming her boyfriend was gone and no one else was around.
She focused on being firm, refusing to raise her voice, and demanded he bring her boyfriend back.
Her account paints a picture of fear, courage, and survival during an incredibly tense encounter.
Aftermath in the Flat
Eventually, the court heard, Ratu returned with her boyfriend, visibly unwell from the strong drink he had been given.
The woman recalled feeling shocked at his state and being forced to remain polite despite her anger.
Ratu reportedly apologized for getting him so drunk, a comment that stood out to her because it implied her boyfriend’s own decisions were ignored.
She said that as Ratu left the room, he attempted to kiss her neck one last time.
The incident was reported the following day.
Court Proceedings Continue
Commander Edward Hannah, prosecuting, told the court that the victim had made it clear she would not comply with Ratu’s alleged demands, but she had hoped to de-escalate the situation.
Ratu denies two counts of sexual assault, and the trial is ongoing.
