Tensions are boiling over in Minneapolis as President Donald Trump steps in to shake up the city’s immigration enforcement.
Trump has replaced South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem’s influence in the city with one of his longtime allies, Border Czar Tom Homan, following a fatal shooting that has sparked outrage and protests.
Minneapolis Shooting Sparks Outrage
The drama erupted after Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old local nurse, was fatally shot by immigration agents over the weekend.
The incident instantly drew national attention, igniting condemnation from Democratic leaders across the country.
Critics have slammed the immigration crackdown as heavy-handed, while some Republican lawmakers worry the operation has spiraled into chaos.
Videos from Minneapolis show protesters smashing windows and spray-painting the Home Suites by Hilton Hotel, where the events unfolded.
Crowds chanted and gathered outside the hotel, even trying to break through the doors, though police largely stayed on the sidelines during the hour-long unrest.
Trump Sides With Homan Over Noem
Reports indicate that Trump is frustrated with how Noem handled the fallout from the Minneapolis shooting.
Privately, he has criticized her department for mismanaging public perception and has turned to Homan, a long-standing rival of Noem within the administration, for a cleanup.
On Truth Social, Trump wrote, “I am sending Tom Homan to Minnesota tonight.
He has not been involved in that area, but knows and likes many of the people there. Tom is tough but fair, and will report directly to me.”
Longstanding Rivalries Shake Up ICE
Noem and Homan have long clashed over the direction of Trump’s immigration agenda.
Under Noem, career ICE officers loyal to Homan reportedly feuded with DHS officials over how to detain and deport undocumented migrants.
These internal conflicts have spilled into public view, with accusations of leaks and internal sabotage surfacing from both sides.
Corey Lewandowski, a longtime Trump associate rumored to be close to Noem, has openly accused Homan of leaking information and attempting to sideline officers aligned with him.
Minnesota Fraud Investigation and Political Jabs
Trump used the Minneapolis turmoil to reiterate broader priorities, including an ongoing investigation into alleged welfare fraud in Minnesota, claiming it has contributed to organized protests in the streets.
He also took aim at Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar, highlighting her wealth accumulation since immigrating from Somalia.
“Separately, a major investigation is going on with respect to the massive 20 Billion Dollar, Plus, Welfare Fraud that has taken place in Minnesota, and is at least partially responsible for the violent organized protests going on in the streets,” Trump stated.
He added, “Additionally, the DOJ and Congress are looking at ‘Congresswoman’ Ilhan Omar, who left Somalia with NOTHING, and is now reportedly worth more than 44 Million Dollars. Time will tell all.”
