“Today, my family and I join millions of Nigerians in solemn remembrance and deep gratitude to the brave men and women of our Armed Forces,” he wrote, reflecting a personal and national appreciation.

Honouring the Ultimate Sacrifice

Atiku went further to acknowledge those who made the ultimate sacrifice while defending Nigeria.

He also praised the courage and discipline of officers still in active service, emphasizing their role in ensuring the safety, unity, and stability of the nation.

“We honour those who paid the supreme sacrifice in defence of our nation, and we salute those who continue to serve with courage, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to the safety and unity of our country,” he added.

He also extended his gratitude to both serving and retired personnel, thanking them for their ongoing contributions to national security and peace.

The Significance of Armed Forces Remembrance Day

Armed Forces Remembrance Day is observed annually on January 15 to honour Nigerian military personnel who died in World Wars, the Nigerian Civil War, and various peacekeeping and internal security operations.

The day is traditionally marked with wreath-laying ceremonies, military parades, and the ceremonial sounding of the Last Post.

Beyond remembrance, it also offers a chance for the nation to appreciate active officers and veterans for their steadfast role in defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and supporting peacekeeping missions at home and abroad.
