Jerome Boateng parts ways with Austrian club LASK Linz after just three games ending a turbulent 15-month spell filled with injuries and off-field controversies

Jerome Boateng’s time at Austrian club LASK Linz has come to an abrupt end, just three matches into the new season.

The World Cup winner’s turbulent 15-month spell with the club has officially concluded, bringing a chapter filled with both promise and controversy to a close.

From Bayern Munich to LASK Linz

Boateng, who lifted the 2014 World Cup with Germany and enjoyed a decade-long career at Bayern Munich from 2011 to 2021, joined LASK Linz on a two-year deal last May after becoming a free agent.

Expectations were high, but the 36-year-old defender struggled to make an impact on the pitch.

Injuries and Limited Appearances

In his time at LASK, Boateng managed just 13 appearances.

Persistent injuries hampered his ability to perform consistently, contributing to the mutual decision to terminate his contract a year early.

Off-Field Troubles

Boateng’s difficulties weren’t confined to the football field. Just months after arriving in Austria, he faced legal trouble in Germany.

A court found him guilty of premeditated bodily harm against his ex-girlfriend, the mother of his twin daughters, relating to a 2018 holiday incident.

Reports said he threw a lamp and a small cooler at her, causing injuries.

The court handed him a suspended fine of just over £168,000 and required him to pay more than £84,000 to charity.

However, he avoided jail time, and no charges of assault, coercion, or defamation were brought due to the legal principle of in dubio pro reo, which favors the defendant if guilt is uncertain.

Backlash from Fans

Despite the suspended sentence, Boateng faced hostility from LASK supporters.

In March, fans reportedly booed and insulted him with chants referencing the legal case, creating an uncomfortable atmosphere for the defender.

Looking Forward

In a statement following his departure, Boateng expressed gratitude to LASK:

“I would like to thank LASK for their trust and the time we spent together here in Linz.

It was an enriching experience to work in a new environment once again.

Now the time is right for me to open a new chapter.

I will soon announce what new challenges — both sporting and personal — await me in the future.”

LASK’s Perspective

LASK sporting director Dino Buric acknowledged Boateng’s contribution:

“Jerome has always behaved professionally throughout his time at LASK and has done everything he can to help the team with his experience.

He has played an important role, especially for our young players, by providing them with excellent support and encouragement.”

What Comes Next?

As Boateng steps away from LASK, the football world will be watching closely to see where the former Bayern Munich and Germany star takes the next steps in his career—both on and off the field.
