Moscow Residents Warned as Bats Enter Apartments Garages and Cars Bringing Potential Rabies Risk Across the City

Moscow has recently experienced a surprising uptick in bats finding their way into apartments, garages, and even vehicles.

Some are hibernating inside attics, while others are nesting in cars, leaving many residents startled by their unexpected cohabitants.

Experts warn that while these small mammals might look harmless, handling them is extremely risky.

Bats can carry diseases like rabies, and even a single bite should be taken very seriously.

Why Bats Are Turning to Residential Spaces

During the winter months, bats go into hibernation, normally choosing tree hollows, abandoned buildings, or attics.

However, they sometimes wander into homes by accident, often chasing insects or searching for a quiet place to rest.

Vladimir Efremenko, a zoologist, explains that young or injured bats are particularly prone to entering homes. “A bat can harm a person if you try to handle it,” he said.

“Like any animal, it will bite in self-defense, but you should not expect aggression without provocation.”

Health Risks Are Real

The main concern with bats is their potential to carry rabies and other infectious diseases. Infectious disease specialist Margarita Nagibina stressed:

“A bat is a carrier of rabies. Its bite is potentially as dangerous as a bite from a stray dog.”

If bitten, residents should wash the wound immediately with running water, disinfect with alcohol, bandage it, and seek urgent medical attention for rabies vaccination.

The bat itself should only be captured by trained professionals so it can be tested; if it does not carry rabies, vaccination may not be required.

How to Keep Bats Out of Your Home

Experts recommend several practical steps to prevent bats from entering living spaces:

• Install mosquito screens on windows

• Seal gaps in attics, basements, vents, and garages

• Use deterrents such as naphthalene sachets, which bats dislike

• Consider ultrasonic devices, but ensure they are safe for pets

By taking these precautions, Moscow residents can reduce the chance of an unwelcome nocturnal visitor while keeping both themselves and the bats safe.
