Italian Football Legend Leonardo Bonucci Delivers Brutal Sliding Tackle on Former England Captain Steph Houghton During Charity Soccer Aid Match at Old Trafford

What was supposed to be a lighthearted evening of football fun for a good cause suddenly turned intense — all thanks to Leonardo Bonucci’s fierce instincts.

The Italian football icon may have hung up his boots professionally, but at Sunday night’s Soccer Aid charity match, he showed the world that old habits die hard.

Bonucci Brings the Heat at Old Trafford

The annual Soccer Aid event at Manchester’s Old Trafford is usually known for its friendly vibes and celebrity antics.

But as the World XI edged closer to sealing a narrow 5–4 win over England, Bonucci flipped the switch from playful to full-throttle.

In the final moments, the ball was rolled down England’s right flank.

Both Bonucci and Steph Houghton — former England Women’s captain — went in for what looked like an even 50/50. Houghton seemed slightly tentative.

Bonucci, not so much. He launched into a no-nonsense slide tackle, winning the ball cleanly but plowing straight through Houghton in the process.

Houghton Goes Down Hard

Houghton hit the ground and stayed there, clearly in pain.

Bonucci, realizing the impact of the challenge, immediately stopped the play and flagged for medical help.

She received treatment for a few minutes before bravely getting back on her feet and finishing the game.

Thankfully, it looked like she was OK — but for a moment, the charity match felt more like a Champions League knockout.

Social Media Has Opinions

As clips of the crunching tackle quickly went viral, social media lit up with mixed reactions.

Some fans applauded Bonucci’s old-school approach.

“Proper challenge. Houghton can take it and wouldn’t want it any other way,” one fan wrote on X.

Another simply declared it “fantastic,” while a third dubbed Bonucci a “legend.”

But not everyone was on board with the hard-tackle-in-a-charity-match vibe.

Even Paddy Power cheekily posted, “Does Leonardo Bonucci know it’s a charity game?”

A Clash of Legends

It’s worth noting both players have nothing left to prove. Bonucci, who just retired last year after a stint at Fenerbahce, carved out a legendary career at Juventus with nine Serie A titles and was part of Italy’s Euro 2020-winning squad.

Houghton, meanwhile, retired in 2024 after 121 appearances for England, and famously captained the Lionesses to a bronze medal at the 2015 World Cup.

It Was for a Good Cause After All

Despite the heavy tackle, the match still achieved what it set out to do: entertain, raise money for UNICEF, and bring together football legends and celebrities for a great cause.

And while Bonucci’s intensity may have stolen the spotlight, the real winner was charity.
