Rudy Giuliani, the former personal attorney to Donald Trump, has reached a settlement with two Georgia election workers, Ruby Freeman and her daughter Shaye Moss, who were falsely accused of election fraud during the 2020 presidential race.
Despite the settlement, the source of the funds that backed the deal remains shrouded in mystery.
Settlement Details and Giuliani’s Asset Protection
Under the terms of the agreement, Giuliani has managed to keep his $5 million Upper East Side apartment, vintage Mercedes, Yankees memorabilia, and other valuable possessions.
In exchange, he will pay an undisclosed sum to Freeman and Moss as compensation for the harm caused by his defamation. The settlement follows a defamation lawsuit that the two women won in December 2023, with Giuliani initially ordered to pay them a whopping $148 million.
Freeman and Moss had been subjected to harassment and threats after Giuliani spread false claims about them, leading to significant emotional distress.
In a joint statement, Freeman and Moss expressed relief that the long ordeal was finally coming to an end, stating, “We can now move forward with our lives.”
Speculation Surrounds the Source of Giuliani’s Funds
Giuliani, 80, has faced financial difficulties, with a reported net worth of around $10 million, raising questions about how he managed to pay for the settlement.
CNN’s Erin Burnett described the situation as a “big mystery,” asking, “Who bailed him out?” Senior reporter Katelyn Polantz, who has been investigating the source of the funds, stated that no one seems willing to reveal how the settlement was financed.
There has been widespread speculation that Giuliani may have received financial assistance from Donald Trump or his associates.
Recently, Trump’s allies had called on him to help Giuliani, and Trump himself had posted a message online urging supporters to “Save Rudy.”
Following Trump’s appeal, Giuliani’s online defense fund raised $169,000, though this amount falls far short of the $148 million owed to Freeman and Moss.
Could Trump or His Allies Be Behind the Funding?
Legal experts, including criminal defense attorney Randy Zelin, have suggested that Trump or his allies might be the mysterious benefactors.
Zelin pointed out that wealthy Trump supporters, such as Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos, have previously donated to Trump’s causes, making it plausible that one of them might have stepped in to help Giuliani.
He added, “People understand that the next four years are going to be Trumpworld, and someone decided to be that benevolent benefactor.”
Giuliani’s lawyer, Joseph Cammarata, refused to comment on the source of the settlement funds, calling the question “irrelevant.”
He confirmed, however, that the settlement had been negotiated in the last 72 hours.
Giuliani’s Statement and Apology
Following the settlement, Giuliani issued a statement expressing regret over the events that led to the lawsuit.
He apologized for the threats and intimidation Freeman and Moss had faced, stating, “No one deserves to be subjected to threats, harassment, or intimidation.”
He also agreed that both parties would refrain from speaking about each other in a defamatory manner in the future.
Despite his public apology, questions remain about Giuliani’s financial situation.
According to court filings from last May, he had only $1 million in his retirement account and limited personal cash on hand.
In recent hearings, Giuliani lamented that most of his remaining assets were tied up and inaccessible.
The Mystery of Giuliani’s World Series Rings
In his sworn testimony, Giuliani mentioned four World Series rings given to him by the late Yankees owner, George Steinbrenner, following his tenure as mayor of New York.
Giuliani testified that the rings were worth about $27,000, and that he had kept three of them for safekeeping.
His son, Andrew Giuliani, had been prepared to testify that the rings were a gift to him, but outside the court, he expressed pride in his father, calling him “an American hero, an American icon.”
As the mystery surrounding the source of Giuliani’s settlement funds continues to grow, unanswered questions remain about how the embattled former lawyer managed to protect his prized possessions while resolving a major legal battle.
