Megyn Kelly, former Fox News host, has slammed Washington Post columnist Catherine Rampell over what she called “disgusting” comments regarding Pete Hegseth’s qualification during his confirmation hearing for Secretary of Defense.
Kelly didn’t hold back on her podcast, expressing strong disagreement with Rampell’s characterization of Hegseth’s experience.
Rampell’s Comments Spark Controversy
During a CNN panel, Rampell made an astonishing statement about Hegseth, saying his main qualification for the Secretary of Defense role was his tenure as a TV host, specifically his time on Fox & Friends.
This remark triggered an immediate backlash, especially from conservative figures like political strategist Scott Jennings, who argued that Rampell was undermining Hegseth’s 20 years of military service.
Kelly Defends Hegseth’s Military Service
Kelly voiced her discontent on her podcast, stating that Rampell’s comments denigrated Hegseth’s military career.
“How is it not denigrating his tours in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Gitmo?” Kelly questioned, emphasizing that Hegseth’s lifetime of service was the true reason for his nomination.
She made it clear that while Hegseth’s Fox appearance may have opened doors for him, it was his military service and work with veterans that made him the right choice for the job.
Kelly Calls Out Rampell’s Credentials
Further criticizing Rampell’s position, Kelly pointed out that Rampell’s background as a Princeton graduate in anthropology and her career as a theater critic at the New York Times didn’t qualify her to assess Hegseth’s qualifications for the Department of Defense.
Kelly’s frustration was evident as she continued to accuse Rampell of being disrespectful to both Hegseth’s service and the military in general.
Megyn Kelly Slams Gretchen Carlson’s Comments on Hegseth’s Alleged Sexual Harassment Claims
Kelly also addressed former colleague Gretchen Carlson’s comments regarding sexual harassment allegations against Hegseth.
Carlson expressed disappointment that these allegations didn’t hinder Hegseth’s path to the Pentagon.
Kelly, however, defended Hegseth, claiming that the police report regarding the incident did not hold up, calling Carlson’s comments “abhorrent.”
Pete Hegseth Stands Strong During His Confirmation Hearing
Amid the controversy, Pete Hegseth maintained his composure during his confirmation hearing.
Hegseth acknowledged his imperfections but shared his belief in redemption and his readiness to lead.
He also spoke about the necessity of transforming the Pentagon, citing the flawed Afghanistan withdrawal as a significant failure that needed accountability.
The Road Ahead for Hegseth’s Confirmation
As Hegseth faces continued scrutiny from Democrats and some media figures, it remains unclear whether he will secure enough support to become Donald Trump’s next Secretary of Defense.
Despite the challenges, Hegseth’s supporters remain steadfast, standing behind him as he continues to navigate this high-stakes confirmation process.
