In a recent courtroom drama, a 77-year-old woman, Donna Jacobs, who fatally struck a pedestrian with her car, appeared to portray herself as the victim.
The case drew significant attention as Jacobs was sentenced to a year in custody and two years on probation.
Last November in San Diego, Jacobs was involved in a tragic accident when she hit 42-year-old Stephen Debow with her Hyundai Ioniq EV. Debow, who was crossing an unmarked crosswalk, was left on the hood of Jacobs’ car as it continued to drive for about 65 feet.
He succumbed to his injuries six days later.
During her sentencing, Jacobs claimed she never saw Debow and thought she was under attack when her windshield was smashed.
According to NBC San Diego, she insisted, “I saw no one, I heard no one anywhere around.
I thought I was being attacked.”
Jacobs further explained that in her panic, she drove home without notifying the police because she believed she had no useful information to offer. “If I had known I’d hit a human being, I would have done something about it,” she stated.
Prosecutors’ Account
Prosecutors revealed that Jacobs made a false statement to her insurance company after the accident and took her car to a body shop to cover up her involvement in the hit-and-run. It took several weeks for the police to identify her as the driver involved.
Sentencing and Reactions
Given her age and clean criminal record, Jacobs is likely to serve her custody time under house arrest.
While the precise cause of the accident remains unclear, it was noted that Jacobs received an Instacart message around the time of the collision.
Debow’s friends expressed their outrage in court, with Michael Berardi stating, “If you did the right thing, I would have forgiven you. But you chose to run from responsibility.”
