Wrexham fans chant against injured referee as Sam Purkiss exits League One match at Charlton due to mid-game injury

Wrexham fans were quick to voice their discontent when referee Sam Purkiss had to be substituted mid-game due to an injury during Saturday’s League One clash against Charlton.

Injury Interrupts Early Stages of Play

The first signs of trouble for Purkiss came just 11 minutes into the match, when he went down and received immediate on-field treatment.

Though he initially tried to continue officiating, managing the intense back-and-forth as both teams battled hard, the strain became too much.

Roughly ten minutes before halftime, Purkiss signaled he couldn’t carry on, leading to fourth official Alan Dale stepping in as his replacement.

Wrexham supporters, far from sympathetic, humorously taunted him with a chant of “You’re not fit to referee” as he exited the pitch.

Wrexham Seeks Points in Race Against Birmingham

With league leaders Birmingham drawing earlier in the day against Mansfield Town, Wrexham arrived at Charlton eager to narrow the standings gap.

The game got off to a strong start for Wrexham after Charlton’s Conor Coventry scored an own goal in the 16th minute, putting Wrexham ahead.

However, Charlton equalized shortly after, courtesy of Macaulay Gillesphey’s strike, balancing the scales in an already heated contest.

Late Drama as Charlton Secures Last-Second Draw

The second half brought more excitement as Andy Cannon reclaimed the lead for Wrexham in the 72nd minute, raising hopes for three valuable points.

Yet, in the dying moments of the game, Charlton’s Matt Godden converted a penalty in the 97th minute, frustrating Wrexham’s efforts and ensuring the match ended in a 2-2 draw.

Strong Start for Wrexham in League One

Despite the disappointment, Wrexham’s season remains impressive with seven wins, four draws, and only two losses in their first 13 matches.

Since a setback against Birmingham in September, Wrexham has been on a strong run, suffering just one defeat in their last seven matches across all competitions.

With the season heating up, Wrexham’s next fixtures will be crucial in their bid to rise in the League One standings.
