Will the fuel levy cuts stop a petrol price increase in April.

The cavalry has arrived, and government intervention announced on Thursday afternoon should help ease the nightmares we’ve been having about the predicted April petrol price increase. Cost were set to soar by R2-R3 per litre next month, but a reduction in the general fuel levy has brought that right down.

Fuel levy cuts – how much has been taken off the petrol price?

Earlier in the week, we used three forecasts from individual fuel specialists, weighing up their predictions for the month ahead. On average, petrol prices were set to skyrocket by an estimated R2.11. However, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana revealed that R1.50 would be knocked off the GFL.

This intervention is only temporary, and will remain in place for April and May 2022. The intervention is across all fuels, meaning that R1.50 will also be shaved off our diesel prices for the next two months.

Is South Africa still facing a petrol price increase in April? Looks like it…

Although this move has been welcomed by many, there are still those who say government hasn’t gone far enough. That’s because the petrol price is still on course to increase in April – albeit at a smaller rate.

The R1.50 levy relief doesn’t cover the massive increments predicted by industry experts. Petrol is still slated to rise by more than 60 cents per litre, and the diesel price still faces a hike of R1.60 per litre.

Now, this data is subject to change. And if there’s a wild swing in the late-month figures, costs could tumble even further. But bodies like the Central Energy Fund and AA South Africa still say our fuel costs are heading for another record-breaking high. Here’s how the adjusted petrol price forecast for April 2022 looks now:
