Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Nigeria’s vice president, says his primary motive for running for president is to provide the best possible service to Nigeria’s progress and development.

The Vice President made the remarks during meetings with delegates and APC stalwarts in Benin, Edo State, and Asaba, Delta State, on Thursday.

Prof. Osinbajo stated that the country needs more committed leaders willing to sacrifice for the sake of the people to ensure its continued growth, even as he expressed his earnest desire to serve if given the ticket under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) platform.

The vice president’s visits to the states of Edo and Delta are part of a statewide engagement with APC delegates and stakeholders.

The Vice President also paid courtesy calls to the palaces of Benin’s Oba, Omo N’Oba Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, and Asaba’s Asagba, His Royal Majesty, Obi (Prof.) Chike Edozien. He formally announced his intention to run for president to the monarchs.

Prof Osinbajo received a rousing welcome from the people, as he has in every other state he has visited so far—Oyo, Ondo, and Ogun—including on the streets, supporters, cultural dancers, residents, and very enthusiastic party delegates who came out in droves to declare their support for his candidacy.

When he arrived in Benin, the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip

“My purpose is to serve our country,” stated the Vice President, who talked passionately about his decision to run for President. When it comes to serving this country, I have a strong desire to do so.”

Prof. Osinbajo expressed his gratitude to the APC delegates for their collaboration and support in the states, saying, “I am profoundly thankful for all the support I have gotten, both individually and collectively, from this camp of our party.”

VP Osinbajo reiterated how President Buhari’s opportunity to serve in government and take on key projects qualified him for the presidency.

“The entire premise and purpose of my campaign for President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is to serve our country; it’s a question of obligation,” he stated.

“Let’s not be sentimental in picking the leader for our country,” the VP said, emphasizing the importance of service for the larger good.

Prof. Osinbajo, in response to questions from delegates from both states, emphasized President Buhari’s administration’s efforts over the last few years to improve the business environment through its Ease of Doing Business reforms.
