West Ham Officials Disclose Reasons for Not Hiring Ruben Amorim While Manchester United Moves Forward with Managerial Change in London

A recent revelation sheds light on why West Ham chose not to hire Ruben Amorim as their manager last season.

Instead, they opted to stick with David Moyes until the end of the season before bringing in Julen Lopetegui during the summer transfer window.

Amorim’s Potential Move to West Ham

Amorim, now 39, is poised to take over at Manchester United after Erik ten Hag’s departure.

As United finalizes a deal with the Sporting Lisbon manager, it’s interesting to note that he could have made his Premier League debut six months ago.

Back in April, Amorim traveled to England for discussions with West Ham, who ultimately decided against hiring him.

Reasons Behind West Ham’s Choice

Initially, there was speculation that West Ham hesitated due to the £8.3 million compensation fee required to release Amorim from his contract with Sporting, in addition to costs for his coaching staff.

However, a spokesperson for West Ham chairman David Sullivan revealed that the decision involved more than just financial concerns.

They expressed admiration for Amorim, stating, “He’s a great manager, but he’s a huge gamble as he’s only done it in his own country with one club.”

Amorim’s Coaching Journey

Despite his success in Portugal, Amorim had never managed outside his home country.

He began his coaching career with Casa Pia in 2018, later moving to Braga before his successful stint at Sporting Lisbon.

During his four years with Sporting, he led the team to two Portuguese league titles, ending a nearly two-decade title drought.

The Aftermath of His West Ham Talks

Following his talks with West Ham, Amorim returned to Portugal and expressed regret over the timing of the discussions, admitting they were “completely wrong.”

However, this did not hinder Sporting, as they went on to clinch the league title the following month and have enjoyed a perfect start to the current season, winning all nine of their league matches so far.

Amorim’s Future Uncertain

Amorim may have just managed his last game for Sporting, leading them to a 3-1 victory against Nacional in the Portuguese Cup.

When questioned about his future post-match, he declined to confirm his move to United, but it appears that Manchester United is eager to finalize the deal before their upcoming clash with Chelsea.

West Ham’s Current Struggles

Meanwhile, West Ham’s decision to pass on Amorim has led to a rocky start under Lopetegui.

The Hammers have lost four of their first nine league matches and currently share the same number of points as Manchester United.

In a surprising turn, West Ham managed to secure a late 2-1 victory against United, marking Erik ten Hag’s final match in charge.

As United looks to Amorim to revitalize their season, the future for both clubs hangs in the balance.
