Wealthy American man abducts his own baby from Italy and is forced by US federal court to return the child to the mother after an emotional custody battle

A custody battle spanning two continents has ended with a U.S. federal judge ordering an American man to return his infant son to the child’s Italian mother.

Eric Nichols, 50, took the baby from Italy without consent, keeping him in the United States for 82 days before the court ruled in favor of the mother, Claudia Ciampa, 46.

Love Story Turned Legal Fight

Nichols and Ciampa first met in 2011 in Piano di Sorrento, a picturesque coastal town where Nichols had relocated to teach English.

Their romance was intense but short-lived, lasting just a year before they parted ways.

Ciampa later married another man, Luigi “Gigi” Porzio, and had more children.

Years later, after separating from Porzio, Ciampa reconnected with Nichols.

Their rekindled relationship led to her pregnancy, and in February 2024, she gave birth to their son, Ethan, in Ohio.

The family soon moved back to Italy, but their happiness was short-lived.

The Abduction and Desperate Pleas

As tensions escalated between the couple, Nichols was granted visitation rights.

On August 30, 2024, he failed to return Ethan after a scheduled visit, instead taking him to California via London.

When Ciampa asked where he was, Nichols initially lied, claiming they were visiting local attractions.

Ciampa sent increasingly desperate messages, begging for her son’s return.

“Eric, when are you bringing him back? I miss him so much,” she wrote.

“Please, Eric, bring Ethan back as soon as possible. He needs his mother.”

Her pleas went unanswered, forcing Ciampa to take legal action.

Legal Battle and Final Verdict

In November 2024, a U.S. court granted Ciampa emergency custody, and authorities in California served Nichols with abduction papers.

He fought back, making allegations against Ciampa, including claims of domestic violence and a lack of maternal attachment.

However, the court dismissed his accusations, ruling that his own video evidence showed him “antagonizing” Ciampa rather than proving any wrongdoing on her part.

Judge David O. Carter condemned Nichols’ actions, stating that his attempt to manipulate the legal system exemplified the exact behavior the Hague Convention seeks to prevent.

The judge made it clear that the court would not protect a parent who abducts a child across international borders to seek a more favorable ruling.

Emotional Reunion in Italy

After months of legal turmoil, Ciampa was finally reunited with her baby.

A heartwarming video captured the moment she arrived back in Italy, clutching Ethan as reporters swarmed around her at the airport.

The long and painful battle had come to an end, but the emotional scars of the ordeal will likely linger for years to come.
