Wayne Rooney secures new punditry role with Amazon Prime after Plymouth dismissal and prepares for Champions League debut in Manchester

Wayne Rooney is stepping back into the punditry game, this time with a new broadcaster.

After his managerial stint at Plymouth ended in December, the Manchester United legend is set to share his insights on the Champions League with Amazon Prime.

A New Home for Rooney’s Analysis

Rooney has already built a reputation as a pundit, having worked with Sky Sports, TNT Sports, and even appearing on BBC’s Match of the Day.

However, this time, he will be joining Amazon Prime’s Champions League coverage, bringing his unique perspective to one of football’s biggest competitions.

Debut Match: Man City vs. Real Madrid

Fans won’t have to wait long to see Rooney in action.

His first appearance will be on Tuesday, where he’ll provide analysis for Manchester City’s first-leg play-off clash against Real Madrid at the Etihad.

The highly anticipated match will see Amazon Prime feature Rooney alongside other established pundits like Alan Shearer and Daniel Sturridge.

Earlier in the season, Frank Lampard also contributed before taking over as Coventry’s manager.

Amazon has the broadcasting rights for the top Tuesday match each week, sharing coverage with TNT Sports.

Adding Rooney to the lineup aims to bring fresh insights and expertise to their Champions League programming.

Tough Times in Management

Rooney’s return to punditry comes after a challenging managerial run.

His time at Plymouth lasted just a few months, with only four wins in 23 league games.

Before that, he had a short-lived tenure at Birmingham, managing just 15 matches with nine defeats.

Despite the struggles, he gained recognition for his leadership at Derby County, where he navigated difficult circumstances.

His overall managerial record stands at 45 wins in 178 games—a win rate of 25.3%.

Rooney’s Candid Style as a Pundit

While his coaching career has had its ups and downs, Rooney has consistently been praised for his honest and direct punditry, particularly when analyzing his former club, Manchester United.

Amazon confirmed his new role on social media, posting, “Wayne Rooney joins #UCLonPrime! The England & Man Utd legend will make his Prime debut on Man City v Real Madrid, LIVE on Tuesday from 6:30 PM!”

Alongside the announcement, they shared a montage of Rooney’s best Champions League moments, including his 30 goals in 85 appearances and his title-winning campaign with United.

Future Plans: More Punditry or a Managerial Comeback?

Rumors have been swirling that Rooney is in talks to become a regular on Match of the Day next season.

With the show undergoing changes—Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman, and Logan set to rotate hosting duties following Gary Lineker’s departure—there could be a spot for him in the lineup.

That being said, Rooney isn’t ruling out a return to management.

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast two weeks ago, he said, “I would like to go back in [to management], but it would have to be the right club. I’m not in a massive rush, but I’m looking at different opportunities.”

Whether it’s in the dugout or behind the mic, Rooney’s next chapter is sure to keep fans talking.
