Virgin Media Faces Widespread Internet Outage Across the UK Leaving Thousands Without Service for Over Six Hours

On February 24, 2025, Virgin Media, one of the UK’s largest broadband providers, faced a significant service outage that disrupted internet access for thousands of customers across the country.

The issues began around 10:30 AM and lasted for more than six hours, affecting people in multiple areas.

While Virgin Media confirmed that services were fully restored by 5 PM, many were left frustrated as they experienced outages well into the afternoon.

The Scale of the Disruption

According to DownDetector, the problem impacted thousands, with over 9,600 reports logged at the peak of the outage.

Of those affected, 72% were dealing with issues related to their landline internet connections, 18% experienced complete service blackouts, and the remaining 11% had trouble accessing Virgin Media’s website.

For many users, the interruption came at a particularly inconvenient time—just as many were starting their workday from home.

Customer Complaints Pour In

The outage sparked a flurry of complaints on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), where users vented their frustrations.

“Is Virgin Media down for anyone else today? My internet is down in East London,” one user posted.

Another expressed disbelief at the ongoing issues: “The audacity for @virginmedia to charge these prices when their WiFi is so glitchy, all the time.”

Some customers reported issues affecting specific services rather than general internet connectivity.

In particular, many mentioned problems with Microsoft tools like Teams and Office 365, as well as Xbox Live gaming.

This led to speculation that the outage may have had a more specific cause.

Repeated Outages and Growing Frustration

Adding to the frustration, this outage came less than 24 hours after another service disruption.

On Sunday afternoon, customers had reported problems accessing popular gaming services like Xbox Live and Destiny 2 servers.

Virgin Media acknowledged the issue, stating that they were investigating, but no specific updates were given on the root cause.

With the recent spate of disruptions, some customers have reached their limit.

“Virgin Media is the worst broadband provider in the UK,” one user complained. “£39 a month for something that never works.

If anyone knows of a better provider, let me know!” Others were equally vocal, pointing out the recent price hikes, which they felt only added to the frustration.

Virgin Media Responds

In response to the outage, a Virgin Media spokesperson apologized to affected customers.

“We have now fully restored services for all customers following the earlier outage,” they said.

“We would like to apologize again for any inconvenience caused.”

However, despite the apology, many users remain dissatisfied, voicing their concerns about the reliability of the service and the company’s ability to fix ongoing issues.

As frustrations continue to build, some customers are even considering switching providers, questioning whether Virgin Media is able to offer a reliable service for the prices they charge.

With so many incidents occurring in such a short period, it’s clear that Virgin Media’s reputation is on the line.
