Virgin Media Experiences Major Broadband Outage Affecting Thousands of Customers Across the UK for Over Six Hours on February 24, 2025

Virgin Media, one of the UK’s largest broadband providers, experienced a significant service disruption today, leaving thousands of customers without internet access for over six hours.

The issues began around 10:30 AM, with affected users reporting problems across the country.

By around 2:00 PM, services began improving, and Virgin Media confirmed that full restoration was completed by 5:00 PM.

How the Outage Unfolded

At its peak, more than 9,600 service interruptions were reported through DownDetector, a site tracking real-time internet issues.

A majority of the complaints (72%) were related to landline internet problems, while 18% faced complete service blackouts. The remaining 11% reported issues with Virgin Media’s website.

A Virgin Media spokesperson quickly acknowledged the problem, offering an apology to customers impacted by the outage.

Ongoing Issues and Microsoft Services

In addition to the February 24 disruption, complaints had been mounting over the past few days, with many users experiencing intermittent problems.

But Monday morning brought an unexpected surge in complaints, particularly about issues with Microsoft services.

Many Virgin Media users reported being unable to access essential tools like Microsoft Teams, Office 365, or even Xbox Live online gaming services.

A spokesperson for Virgin Media confirmed their awareness of these issues, adding that they were working to resolve them.

Social Media Reactions

As expected, social media was flooded with frustrated customers venting about the disruption.

On X (formerly Twitter), one user from East London tweeted, “Is Virgin Media internet down/being problematic for anyone else this morning?” Another customer took to the platform to express their discontent, saying, “The audacity for @virginmedia to charge some of the prices they do when their WiFi is so glitchy, all the time.”

With many people working from home, the timing of the outage created additional frustration, particularly for those relying on stable internet for remote work.

One user shared, “VPN connection down that I use to remote into work but WiFi at home working normally.

Everyone in the business with Virgin Media is unable to connect to the works VPN.”

A Series of Outages and Growing Discontent

This morning’s outage came less than 24 hours after another service interruption.

On the previous day, Virgin Media customers had already been complaining about difficulties accessing gaming services like Xbox Live and servers for Destiny 2.

While Virgin Media acknowledged the issue and stated that they were investigating, there was no further update regarding the root cause of the problem.

The recent disruptions have left many customers frustrated and some even threatening to switch providers.

One user expressed, “My lord, @virginmedia has to be the worst internet provider in the UK. £39 a month for something that never works.

If anyone has any better internet providers, please let me know.” Another added, “Despite a £25 price increase per month, @virginmedia broadband is still down.

Restarted the router, and it’s still not working properly. Unacceptable @Ofcom.”

This wave of dissatisfaction has prompted many to consider leaving Virgin Media for alternative providers, citing reliability concerns and increasing costs.
