LOTTO BAD LUCK: Man can’t claim his money as he is UNDOCUMENTED

Imagine winning millions of rands in the Lotto or Powerball draw but being unable to claim your prize – that’s what happened to a 28-year-old Belgian guy.

The man, who is originally from Algeria, won $270,000 (nearly R3.9 million) on a scratchcard, according to international media. However, due to his undocumented status, he is unable to receive his funds.

“I’m going to buy a place to reside in Brussels when I acquire the money.” He is quoted in Belgian media as saying, “And maybe a vehicle.”

He has since undertaken a massive effort to collect his rewards, even hiring a lawyer to assist him. The biggest issue is that he does not have official identification papers or a fixed address, which implies he is homeless.

“My client is in a legal bind; he lacks identification and a bank account.” We’re seeking for documents that will allow us to verify his identification. His lawyer, Alexander Verstraete, told AFP that he will have to contact his relatives in Algeria.

FRIEND TRIED CLAIMING LOTTO WINNINGS

Because he had the proper paperwork, one of the man’s pals attempted to collect the lotto prizes on his behalf, but he and two others were detained. The reason for this is that the authorities suspected them of stealing the winning scratchcard. After the winner arrived with his lawyer and explained the circumstances, they were released.

The winning ticket was purchased in Zeebrugge, a Belgian port city, a few weeks ago. It is a common stopping point for migrants and refugees on their way to England.

According to Belgian media, the man fled Algeria many months ago and traveled on foot across Spain and France before arriving in Belgium. The winning lottery ticket is currently being held in a Zeebrugge court, according to the man’s lawyer.
