In a show of international support, the United World Congress of Diplomats (UN-WCD), alongside the International Institute of Experts on Political Economy and Administration, recently praised Nigeria for strengthening its military collaboration with the United States.
The commendation came during a press briefing in Abuja, where the diplomats unveiled their Assessment Report on Nigeria’s ongoing fight against terrorism.
Praise for Joint Military Operations
Prof. Tunji Asaolu, Secretary-General of UN-WCD, highlighted the growing synergy between Nigerian forces and their American counterparts.
According to him, recent joint air operations targeting terrorist networks have been executed with precision, discipline, and effectiveness.
Remarkably, the assessment confirmed that these operations have not caused civilian casualties, reflecting strict adherence to international rules of engagement and professional conduct.
“We commend both the US military and the Nigerian Ministry of Defence for the progress made in weakening terrorist networks,” Asaolu said.
He added that the collaboration has successfully disrupted insurgent strongholds across several regions of Nigeria.
Ongoing Threats Demand Continued Vigilance
Despite these achievements, Asaolu warned that terrorism remains a persistent threat.
He cited the recent bandit attack in Kasuwan-Daji, Niger State, which claimed over 40 lives, as a stark reminder that Nigeria’s security apparatus still needs urgent improvements.
The Secretary-General called for a “surgical cleansing” of the defence system, emphasizing that officials whose actions raise operational or public concerns should be reassessed.
“Confronting terrorism effectively requires removing internal bottlenecks that could hinder progress,” he said.
“The war cannot succeed if credibility gaps exist at the top.
Allowing officials facing serious allegations to remain in sensitive positions risks undermining public trust and operational effectiveness.”
President Tinubu’s Leadership Highlighted
Asaolu commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for showing exceptional political will in addressing insecurity, contrasting Nigeria’s approach with destabilizing scenarios witnessed in other nations.
“President Tinubu has gone beyond expectations in tackling terrorism,” he stated, “but internal inefficiencies must be addressed to fully realize these gains.”
US Airstrike Confirms Active Cooperation
The assessment coincided with renewed attention on Nigeria’s security challenges following a US airstrike targeting suspected terrorists in the country.
US officials confirmed that the operation was coordinated with Nigeria and based on shared intelligence.
The strike is part of ongoing efforts to dismantle extremist groups operating on Nigerian soil.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar confirmed that Nigeria provided the intelligence that led to the strike and formally approved the operation.
Speaking to Channels Television, Tuggar emphasized that the action reflects sustained bilateral security cooperation and is not influenced by religious considerations.
A Long-Term Struggle Against Terrorism
Nigeria continues to face a complex security landscape, including the insurgencies by Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in the North-East, alongside widespread banditry in the North-West.
These crises have claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions, making international collaboration crucial for restoring stability.
While US military assistance, training, and intelligence sharing have long supported Nigeria, direct airstrikes on Nigerian soil are rare and often spark public debate.
The recent operations underscore a deepening partnership between the two countries in the fight against terrorism, highlighting both progress and the challenges that remain.
