According to the commander, Ukrainian forces “break through Russian defenses in the south.”

According to a commander engaged in combat in the southern region, Ukrainian forces have managed to breach the most formidable Russian defense line in the south. This achievement is expected to facilitate a swifter advancement for the Ukrainian forces, as reported by the commander to Reuters.

Beginning a counteroffensive in June, Ukraine faced challenges in the form of well-prepared Russian defense positions, fortified with minefields, which hindered their progress towards the Sea of Azov in the south.

Recent reports indicate that Ukrainian forces have raised their national flag in Robotyne, a settlement situated about 10 km (six miles) to the south of the frontline town of Orikhiv in the southern Zaporizhzhia region. The commander leading troops into Robotyne, using the name “Kombat,” emphasized that this achievement is just a step and their ultimate goal is the Sea of Azov.

Robotyne is approximately 100 km away from Berdiansk, a Sea of Azov port, and 85 km from the strategically important city of Melitopol. Both Berdiansk and Melitopol have been occupied by Russian forces since Moscow’s full-scale invasion in February of the previous year.

While Moscow has not officially confirmed Ukraine’s advance into Robotyne, a US official expressed doubts last week about Ukrainian forces successfully reaching and retaking Melitopol in their counteroffensive strategy aimed at dividing Russian forces in the southern region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy defended the country’s approach, dismissing concerns of troops being spread too thin and reiterating his confidence in regaining all Ukrainian territory seized by Moscow.

The commander known as “Kombat” indicated that Ukrainian forces have now entered territories primarily occupied by “Russian logistics” groups. He anticipates that these regions will pose less resistance compared to the previously encountered Russian defense lines, allowing for a quicker progression. As of now, Ukrainian troops are engaged in reclaiming the remaining Russian-controlled houses in Robotyne.
