Two Tragic Well Accidents Leave a Two-Year-Old Boy and a 28-Year-Old Man Dead in Kwankwaso Town and Karofawa Yan Kifi Village Kano State

Two separate tragedies unfolded in Kano State on Wednesday, highlighting the dangers that uncovered wells can pose to communities.

Toddler Drowns in Kwankwaso Town

In Kwankwaso town, Madobi Local Government Area, a two-year-old boy named Sa’idu Ahmad tragically lost his life after falling into a well.

The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident in a statement issued by their Public Relations Officer, Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi.

Abdullahi explained that the fire service received an urgent call at around 12:15 p.m. from Deputy Director Rabiu Garba, reporting that a child had fallen into a well.

Rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the scene.

“The boy was rescued unconscious and later handed over to Umar Shehu of the Madobi Police Division.

The cause of the incident is still under investigation,” Abdullahi said.

Adult Victim Falls into Well in Karofawa Yan Kifi

Later on the same day, another person suffered a similar fate in Ghari Local Government Area.

Suleiman Sani, a 28-year-old man, fell into a well in Karofawa Yan Kifi Village.

Abdullahi reported that the fire service responded quickly to the distress call from Ghari Fire Station.

“Our rescue team mobilized immediately. The victim was found unconscious, and his parents later confirmed his death.

He was handed over to the Village Head, Alhaji Musa Aliyu. The cause is still under investigation,” he said.

Fire Service Urges Caution

The Kano State Fire Service extended heartfelt condolences to the families affected by these tragedies.

They also reminded the public about the importance of covering wells to prevent such accidents.

Similar Incidents Highlight Broader Risk

Tragic accidents involving wells are not new to Nigeria.

In November 2025, PUNCH Online reported that 12-year-old Nabilat died after falling into a domestic well in Ikoyi Community, Irewolede area of Ilorin West Local Government Area, Kwara State.

The girl had gone to fetch water when she slipped and fell, underlining the persistent risks posed by uncovered or poorly maintained wells.
