Tragic Death of JMPD Officer in Diepkloof, Soweto

A Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officer, Khensani Mabaso, was tragically shot and killed in her home in Diepkloof, Soweto.

The 32-year-old was found dead with gunshot wounds, still in full uniform.

At the time of the incident, she was on duty, and her patrol vehicle was found parked outside her family home.

Possible Robbery Attempt

Initial reports suggest that the shooting may have been the result of an attempted robbery.

Mabaso’s cell phone was missing, adding weight to this theory.

The investigation is ongoing, with a murder case now being handled by the Diepkloof police.

In response to the tragedy, the JMPD’s Acting Chief of Police, Mr. Patrick Jaca, offered heartfelt condolences to Mabaso’s family, friends, and colleagues.

He assured the public that every effort would be made to ensure that justice is served and that the person responsible for her death is found.

Police Officers Killed in Durban

In other unfortunate news, two police officers in Durban were killed while on duty just days before the Diepkloof tragedy.

On December 14, 2024, Captain Danasagren Pather and Warrant Officer Moses Ndlovu were shot and killed while responding to a shooting incident in Cliffdale.

The suspect involved in the deaths was later found dead following a shootout with the police.

Authorities believe the suspect was also responsible for the deaths of two women earlier in the week.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, confirmed that the suspect had been shot by police, and a weapon that had been previously stolen from them was recovered.

Unresolved Questions About the Durban Shootings

As the investigation continues, authorities are working to determine whether the suspect acted alone or had assistance.

Mkhwanazi mentioned that the suspect’s actions seemed to follow a series of tragic events, including the shooting of two women in Pinetown earlier in the week and an attack on a family member during a funeral.

The suspect had mingled with the crowd during the police’s investigation of the crime scene and launched an attack on the officers, leading to the deadly confrontation.

Police Officer Kills Girlfriend in Eldorado Park

A separate tragedy took place in Eldorado Park when a Gauteng Crime Prevention Warden was fatally shot by her boyfriend, a police officer.

The 22-year-old woman was killed at the Eldorado Park Police Station.

The officer responsible for the shooting has since been charged with murder, and his case has been postponed until January 6, 2025.
