Tucson authorities launch urgent search as Today Show host Savannah Guthrie’s 84-year-old mother goes missing near her Arizona home

The usually bustling streets of Tucson, Arizona, have become the center of a tense search as Nancy Guthrie, mother of Today Show host Savannah Guthrie, has been reported missing.

At 84 years old, Nancy’s sudden disappearance has prompted a serious response from local authorities, with family and officials alike expressing deep concern.

Last Seen Saturday Night Near Her Home

According to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, Nancy was last seen Saturday night around 9:30 to 9:45 p.m. near her Tucson residence.

Her absence was officially reported the following day, when a family member called 911 around noon on Sunday.

Sheriff Chris Nanos revealed that deputies found “concerning evidence” during their initial investigation, which led homicide detectives to join the case.

The nature of that evidence has not been publicly disclosed.

“We hope we find her safe and sound, but we are very concerned,” Nanos said at a press briefing, emphasizing that while the search is being treated primarily as a rescue operation, investigators are not ruling out foul play.

Extensive Search Underway

Search efforts are in full swing across Tucson, especially in the Catalina Foothills neighborhood.

Crews are employing dogs, drones, and even the sheriff’s plane to comb the area.

Hospitals and medical transport services have also been contacted, but as of now, no one has reported seeing Nancy.

“We’re pretty much throwing everything at this,” Nanos added.

Nancy is described as five-foot-five inches, weighing around 150 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes.

It is unclear what she was wearing at the time of her disappearance.

Due to her age and some mobility issues, she is considered a “vulnerable adult,” though authorities noted she does not have any cognitive impairments.

Savannah Guthrie’s Connection and Memories

Savannah Guthrie, who has not yet publicly commented on her mother’s disappearance, has deep ties to Tucson.

She grew up in the city and graduated from the University of Arizona.

She returned late last year to film segments showcasing her hometown.

Nancy also frequently visited Savannah in New York City, where she appeared on the Today Show, earning praise from her daughter for her unwavering support.

Reflecting on her mother’s influence, Savannah once shared on air, “When I was in my 30s, I really wished to be married and to be a mom, and things just did not happen that fast for me.

And my mom’s confidence that I would be a mom — even as the years ticked by — meant so much to me.

She said, ‘Of course you’ll be a mom, and you’re going to be a wonderful mom.’ That faith carried me through some really hard times.”

What Happens Next

Authorities continue to follow every lead in their search for Nancy, appealing to anyone in the Tucson area with information to come forward.

As the community holds its collective breath, family, friends, and neighbors are hoping for her safe return.
