In a devastating series of events in Indiana, a woman died from a medical emergency in her home, leaving the four-year-old girl she was babysitting to face a brutal attack from six pit bulls.
Tragically, the young girl did not survive the vicious assault.
The Unthinkable Discovery
Gina Flores never could have imagined that Monday would be the last time she saw her daughter alive.
Flores had asked her aunt, Oliva Mora Regalado, 53, to watch her child, Evelynn Lopez, while she was away.
Sadly, Regalado, who had a pre-existing medical condition, passed away from a medical emergency while caring for Evelynn.
With Regalado’s sudden passing, Evelynn was left alone with seven dogs in the house—six pit bulls and one poodle mix.
According to a statement from the Huntingburg Police Department, it’s unclear what triggered the animals to suddenly attack the young girl.
The Tragic Chain of Events
Flores, returning to pick up her daughter, was horrified to discover the gruesome scene.
Authorities were alerted, and emergency services arrived around 3:40 pm.
First responders tried to save Evelynn’s life, but despite their efforts, she succumbed to her severe injuries shortly after being rushed to Deaconess Memorial in Jasper.
Regalado, who had been pronounced dead at the scene, was also mourned by her family.
All seven dogs involved in the attack were euthanized at the home, as per police orders, to ensure the safety of everyone involved and preserve evidence. The dogs’ bodies were then sent for lab testing.
Community’s Heartfelt Response
While the family has yet to speak publicly about the tragedy, friends and community members have shown their support online.
Many have shared heartfelt messages of sympathy for Flores and her partner, Alberto Lopez.
One Facebook user, Brisa Villalobos, expressed her sorrow, calling Gina Flores an “amazing mother” who considered Evelynn her “little blessing from God.”
Villalobos also urged people to show compassion for the grieving family, asking for an end to the judgment and assumptions being made about the situation.
A Similar Tragedy in Ohio
This heartbreaking incident in Indiana follows closely behind a similar tragedy in Ohio, where a seven-month-old girl was mauled to death by her family’s dog just a week earlier.
Elizah Turner of Columbus died after being attacked by one of the three pit bulls in her home.
The baby was rushed to the hospital but did not survive her injuries.
Columbus Police described the attack as a “tragic accident” and confirmed that no charges are expected to be filed.
The pit bulls involved were taken by animal control for further investigation, and the entire community has been left grieving for both families affected by these horrific events.
