A heartbreaking event occurred at Moriting Primary School, located in the Capricorn South education district, on Monday, 14 April.

A Grade 4 learner tragically passed away after accidentally swallowing the lid of a pen.

How the Tragedy Unfolded

The Limpopo Department of Education reported that the young learner had swallowed the pen lid while at school.

After the incident, the learner quickly informed the teacher that they were having difficulty breathing.

Immediate action was taken to get the learner to the hospital, but despite the best efforts of medical professionals, they were unable to save the child.

Department Extends Condolences and Support

In response to the tragic loss, the Limpopo Department of Education expressed their deepest condolences to the family and the school community.

MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya shared her heartfelt sympathy, acknowledging how painful it is for any parent to lose a child.

She also offered her thoughts and prayers to the grieving family and encouraged the classmates and teachers of the learner to stay strong during this difficult time.

“We must remember that no parent should ever have to bury their child,” Lerule-Ramakhanya said, further expressing her support for the school community.

Psychosocial Services Deployed

To assist the family and students affected by the loss, the department has sent psychosocial services to provide emotional and psychological support to both the family and the school.

These services aim to help those who are grieving and struggling to cope with such a devastating event.
