In light of Pope Francis’s concerns about the U.S. government’s deportation program, Tom Homan, the U.S. border czar, defended the Trump administration’s immigration policies.

He made it clear that these policies, according to him, are saving lives and stopping human trafficking.

The Focus on Public Safety and National Security

During a February 13 interview on EWTN’s “The World Over with Raymond Arroyo”, Homan explained the government’s focus: “Right now, we’re prioritizing public safety and national security threats,” he said.

This, according to Homan, is the primary goal of their approach, and he believes the president’s stance is clear about where their priorities lie.

Respecting the Dignity of Deportees

When asked whether the Trump administration was respecting the dignity of those being deported, Homan, who has been Catholic all his life, assured viewers: “We absolutely are.”

He stressed that the strong enforcement of border policies, while tough, aims to reduce the tragic consequences migrants face.

The Safety Benefits of Strong Border Enforcement

Homan also highlighted the ways strict border control helps prevent human suffering.

He mentioned the heartbreaking reality that many women and children face on the journey through the cartels.

According to Homan, a significant number of female migrants experience sexual assault, and others die trying to cross the border.

He pointed out that with the Trump administration reducing illegal immigration by 90%, countless lives have been spared.

“How many women aren’t being sexually assaulted? How many children aren’t dying crossing the river? How many aren’t being trafficked or poisoned by fentanyl?” he asked.

Defending U.S. Sovereignty

Homan made it clear that, just as other nations protect their borders, the U.S. has every right to secure its own.

He noted, “We have the right to our sovereignty, just like the Vatican does.”

A Comparison to Vatican’s Tough Policies

In a final comparison, Homan pointed out that the Vatican’s penalties for illegal entry into its territory are even tougher than those in the U.S.

The Vatican recently instituted fines ranging from $10,000 to $25,000 and prison sentences that could last from one to four years.

According to Homan, these penalties are more severe than those imposed by the U.S., underscoring his belief that strong immigration policies are necessary.
