Time magazine has named President-elect Donald Trump as its 2024 ‘Person of the Year,’ marking the second time he has received the prestigious title.
His first recognition came in 2016, after his initial presidential victory.
A Year of Highs and Lows
This year, Trump made headlines once again, with his third bid for the White House culminating in a decisive win.
His victory followed a year filled with significant challenges, including surviving a close assassination attempt in July and becoming the first U.S. president convicted of a crime in May.
Reflecting on his success, Trump told Time that his win was due to striking a “nerve” with the American people, who he believes were angry and frustrated with the political status quo.
Time’s Process and Other Contenders
Time’s Person of the Year is awarded to an individual, group, or concept that has had the most notable impact on the world, for better or worse, during the past 12 months.
Trump’s selection came after a competitive shortlist that included figures such as Vice President Kamala Harris, Elon Musk, and Princess Kate Middleton.
Along with Trump, thirteen other U.S. presidents have been named Person of the Year, with seven of them receiving the title more than once.
Time’s Additional Awards
Alongside Person of the Year, Time also recognized others for their accomplishments. E
lton John was honored as Icon of the Year, Caitlin Clark received Athlete of the Year, and Lisa Su, CEO of Advanced Micro Devices, was named CEO of the Year.
Last year, Taylor Swift took the Person of the Year title, reflecting her influence amid her global Eras tour and the release of a successful album.
Trump’s Complex Relationship with Time
Trump has long had a complicated relationship with Time, frequently commenting on the magazine’s coverage.
In 2017, he claimed that Time had reached out to him about being named Person of the Year but that he had turned the offer down, though Time disputed his statement.
Additionally, a framed copy of Time with Trump on the cover, displayed in his clubs, was revealed to be a fake.
Over the years, he has both celebrated his cover appearances and criticized the magazine, especially in 2012 when he was excluded from its list of the 100 most influential people.
A Legacy of Mixed Honors
Time’s Person of the Year has included a mix of positive and controversial figures.
For instance, Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin were both named to the title, though many others have received the recognition for their positive global impact.
The most frequent honoree is President Franklin Roosevelt, who was named Person of the Year three times.
As Time nears its 100th anniversary of naming a Person of the Year, the magazine’s list continues to reflect a diverse range of people, from political leaders to cultural icons, who have left a significant mark on history.
