Tiger Woods is facing intense backlash for his recent decision to meet with LIV Golf’s Saudi Arabian sponsors in New York City, just a day before the somber anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
The Controversial Meeting
Woods, along with other leaders from the PGA Tour, is reportedly in talks with LIV Golf’s Saudi backers this week.
The goal is to resolve the ongoing feud between golf’s two biggest rival factions.
Flight tracking data revealed that private jets belonging to Woods, the Saudi oil giant Aramco, and the PGA Tour all landed in New York on Monday.
Backlash from 9/11 Justice
Brett Eagleson, president of 9/11 Justice, has strongly criticized Woods for scheduling the meeting right before the 23rd anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center.
Eagleson, who lost his father in the South Tower at age 15, expressed his outrage, stating:
“Tomorrow marks the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy, yet here we are, just down the street from Ground Zero, with the PGA Tour and Tiger Woods negotiating with Saudi backers.
Recent reports from CBS News confirm the Saudi government’s involvement in the attacks.
It is both disgusting and unacceptable for Woods and the PGA Tour to proceed with these talks, especially at this time.”
Saudi Involvement and 9/11 Justice
9/11 Justice has long accused Saudi Arabia of supporting the terrorists involved in the attacks, and they’ve been vocal critics of LIV Golf.
In 2022, they condemned former President Donald Trump for hosting a LIV Golf tournament at his New Jersey course, expressing their extreme pain and frustration over his decision.
Ongoing Negotiations
Following the shock merger announcement in June 2023, both sides of golf’s divide are working to finalize a deal.
ESPN reports that negotiations could span several days and are focused on securing a $1 billion investment from the Public Investment Fund (PIF) into PGA Tour Enterprises.
PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan emphasized that reaching a deal with the PIF remains a priority, although no deadline has been set.
He mentioned that productive conversations are crucial for positive outcomes and maintaining a constructive negotiation atmosphere.
Upcoming Golf Showdown
In other golf news, it was recently announced that Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler will face off against Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau in a high-profile event.
This made-for-TV showdown will take place in Las Vegas this December, showcasing the best from both rival circuits.
